WASHINGTON D.C. INFO

Hello and Happy 2nd Quarter, Families!

Can you believe it is already October and snowing? Where did the time go? Since time seems to be flying right by, I wanted to send a reminder about the Washington DC trip for 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students next school year. Our Enrollment Deadline is fast approaching, and our trip may be cancelled if we do not have 40 enrollments by January 1st 2019. Please see below for some reminders about how to enroll and about the trip overall. As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any and all questions.

The link above is our Walking Tree page. If you click on this link, you will find everything you need related to the Washington DC trip in October 2019. You can find the full itinerary (this piece is not entirely set in stone, but pretty accurate), payment plans, fundraising opportunities through Walking Tree, and more. You will enroll and pay on this page. As we get closer to the trip, you will also find packing list information, travel insurance, and everything else you need to know!
The total cost for the trip is $2,390 or $2,271 if you pay in full at the time of enrollment. This price includes flights, hotel stays (all hotels are 3-star or better with full accommodations), three meals a day, transportation, all activity and entrance fees, taxes and Walking Tree leadership.

  • How do I pay?
Click HERE to go straight to the payment page! If you are on the main Walking Tree/ Westgate DC webpage (click here) you will see a yellow button that says "Enroll Now." This is where you enroll for our program and also pay. There are two methods of payment. 1. You can pay in full at the time of enrollment and save 5%. 2. The other option is to enroll and pay a $500 deposit. At the time of deposit, you are also enrolled for a payment plan. Walking Tree will request your payment information and pull monthly payments from the time of enrollment through July 2018. The earlier you enroll, the less your monthly payments will be.

Before you can enter any enrollment information, you have to make a payment FIRST. You will be routed to the enrollment page once a payment is complete. When you begin to make the payment, it may be confusing. You will select either the "Pay in full" option, where you will type in $2271.00 (the discounted price), or you will select the Payment Plan option where you will pay $500. When it asks you for "Program Name" please type in Westgate DC Program. If this is still confusing, please do not hesitate to reach out to Amanda Novak for help!

  • Is there fundraising available?
Yes! Since you are paying Walking Tree directly, we are not offering too many Westgate fundraising opportunities. When we fundraise through Westgate, we collect fundraising and since we are unable to pay Walking Tree on behalf of your student, we are encouraging you to utilize the following fundraising methods.
  1. Walking Tree Coffee Fundraiser - Click here for information on Walking Tree Coffee. If you pay in full but then fundraise through Walking Tree, they will cut you a check and send a reimbursement directly to you.
  2. Westgate World's Finest Chocolate Sales - For the past few years, we have offered chocolate to our students to sell as a fundraiser. The cost of each box is $30. There are 60 bars in a box, and each bar sells for $1. If you purchase a box from Westgate for $30, you will make a 50% profit that you can keep. If you would like to sell chocolate, please reach out to Amanda Novak who will send you specific information about this fundraiser.
  3. Sponsorship Letter - Attached is a template for a sponsorship letter. Feel free to send this letter out to friends and family, or even use it to create a Go Fund Me.

  • Other Details
If for some reason, we do not hit our minimum enrollment number and the trip is cancelled, you will get a full refund.

The enrollment deadline currently says January 2019. We recognize that this is coming up quickly, but we need to have a relatively accurate number to move forward with flights.

If your student is a current 8th grader, they can attend this trip as long as they are still a Westgate student in 9th grade. We are asking for early enrollment (January) to book flights, but please do not enroll your current 8th grader until you have confirmed that he or she will be attending Westgate as a 9th grader in the Fall 2019. Also, note that FRCC does not have the same Fall break as Westgate.

If you have any questions, please email me at any time!
Thank you!

ADVOCACY UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2018

Parents! THIS Thursday, September 6th, Amanda Novak and Generation Schools Network are hosting a Parent & Student Focus Group about topics such as bullying, social emotional learning, and more. Join us for meaningful conversation and DONUTS on Thursday morning from 8:15am-9:15am. We need your input - your voices matter!

This month in Advocacy, we will be focusing on self-awareness. We will be working on goal setting, being kind to ourselves, peer pressure, self-esteem, as well as college and career readiness.

Communication Pathways
The best way to contact your child’s teacher directly is via email.
Mr. Rowan: [email protected]
Ms. Nieto: [email protected]
Mrs. Wild: [email protected]
Ms. Kaplan: [email protected]

Please allow teachers 48 hours (2 business days) to respond. If your concerns are not addressed in that time, please reach out to Mr. Rowan as team lead to get further support. If Mr. Rowan is unable to meet your needs, he may refer you to our 7-12 Assistant Principal, Amanda Novak.

Planners
Students were each given a planner to use this year to aid in time management and organization. Each day, they should be copying down the agenda for each class. This is a great tool to see what’s happening daily. Please encourage your student to maintain this by checking in with them regularly. Students are also encouraged to track upcoming due dates in their planners.
