LITERACY UPDATE: FEBRUARY 11- FEBRUARY 15

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Determine who they want to be the subject of their Hero Biography Summative.
  • Engage in class and group discussions over the Hero's Journey and Narrative Writing.
  • Develop understanding of Narrative Writing- both Personal and Biographical.

LITERACY UPDATE: FEBRUARY 4- FEBRUARY 8

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Reflecting on their own Heroic Attributes through a Jigsaw, a Web Quest, and Socratic Seminars.
  • Choosing their Movies for the Independent Film Viewing Project. This project is, as the name suggests, done independently and at home. Students will need to get Parent Approval for PG 13 rated films.
Parents: Please take a moment to read over the Summative Instructions and Rubric that I have posted on our Class Page. This is a great chance to have some quality time going over academics with your student.

LITERACY UPDATE: JANUARY 28- FEBRUARY 1

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Participate in a Socratic Seminar over The Hero's Journey to determine their mastery over the lesson.
  • Complete the "A Hero in Me" worksheet so they can recognize their own heroic traits.
  • Analyze The Hero's Journey further in a Jigsaw Activity so they can have more depth in the lesson.

HERO'S JOURNEY_ITINERARY, INSTRUCTIONS, RUBRIC

Here is the Instructions, Rubric, and Itinerary for our Third Quarter Unit, "A Hero's Journey."
 
Please take time to look it over, with your student preferably, so that expectations of assignments and grading are understood. This is especially important at this time of the year, as students are being asked to take more and more accountability and responsibility for their learning.

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Reflect on Rites of Passage.
  • Learn about The Hero's Journey through a reading passage and reflection.
  • Complete an Interactive Hero's Journey to demonstrate mastery of the concept.

LITERACY UPDATE: JANUARY 14- JANUARY 18

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Be introduced to the Hero's Journey Unit.
  • Determine the specific Learning Targets that will be aligned with the Hero's Journey Unit.
  • Analyze Rites of Passage and compose a Reflection over the activity completed on the lesson.

LITERACY UPDATE: DECEMBER 16- DECEMBER 20

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Reflect on the I Am Malala Unit that we just finished
  • Practice Timed Writing Prompts
  • Create a S.M.A.R.T. Goal related to Literacy using MAPs Scores and individual strengths.
Please do not forget that we have a short week. Thursday is a half day of classes and Friday begins Winter Break. Hope to see you at Conferences!

LITERACY UPDATE: DECEMBER 10- DECEMBER 14

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Complete their Dual-Part Summative for the I Am Malala Unit. We will be using each day as a structured time to work on specific parts of each Summative Part (Reading Group Roles and Poetry Portfolio)
  • This Summative is due on Friday, December 14. No extensions will be given. No exceptions.

LITERACY UPDATE: (DECEMBER 3- DECEMBER 7)

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Participating in Class Discussions and Group Discussion over the remainder of the book, I Am Malala
  • Respond to Writing Prompts using the proper R.A.C.E.S. Formula over the remainder of the book, I Am Malala
  • Read the remainder of the book, I Am Malala, with their Reading Group
  • Create Blackout Poetry to add to their Poetry Portfolios
  • Prepare for their Summatives to be due Next Friday, December 14.

Charter School High School Program OPEN HOUSE!

November 26, 2018

6:00-7:30 pm: Charter School High School Program Open House

1500 E. 128th Ave., Thornton, CO 80241 (Adams 12 Educational Support Center)

Come to learn about Charter School high school programs at New America, Prospect Ridge Academy, Westgate Community School, and Stargate. Meet administration and staff and get your questions answered. Limited choice may be available at some high schools.

Each School will have individual tables for parents, students, and families to learn about their school and its programming.

 

POETRY PORTFOLIO_INSTRUCTIONS AND RUBRIC

Students in Literacy are working on a Dual-Part Summative for their current Unit. Students will be Participating in Discussions, Responding to Writing Prompts, Reading I Am Malala, and Filling out their Group Roles Worksheets.
 
Students will also be creating a Poetry Portfolio. This portfolio is a way for students to see how they can express themselves in such a simple way as writing poetry about Social Justice. 
 
All Poetry created will be done during class time. Students will only be working on the portfolio outside of class if they want, or need, more time than is given in class. 
 
The Portfolio is due December 14. I will NOT accept any portfolios later than this, due to grades for Second Quarter being submitted.
 
The Attached File is the Instructions and Rubric for the Poetry Portfolio. Students will have 10 Poetry Assignments. All the information for the Poetry Days is on their OneNote for Literacy. 

I AM MALALA_READING GROUPS_ROLES, INSTRUCTIONS, AND RUBRIC

Students are working on a Dual-Summative for this Unit in Literacy. 
 
First, Students will be participating in their Reading Groups. Second, they will be creating a Poetry Portfolio. ALL of the work for these will be done in class, excepting students who would like to, or are asked to, take their work home to complete because they needed extra work time. 
 
The Reading Groups Requirements are listed:
  • Reading the book I Am Malala
  • Participating in Class and Group Discussions (these CANNOT be made up)
  • Responding to Writing Prompts using R.A.C.E.S. Formula (students have the opportunity to edit and revise for a higher grade)
  • Filling out their Reading Group Role's Worksheet
The end of this Unit is December 14. Students will not be able to turn in any of the requirements for this Summative after this date. As I have already noted, Discussions may not be made up (students absent are excused). 

LITERACY UPDATE: NOVEMBER 26- NOVEMBER 30

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Continue reading I Am Malala
  • Participate in Class Discussions over the Themes addressed in I Am Malala
  • Create "Found" Poetry using magazines to contribute to their Poetry Portfolio
  • Answer a Writing Prompt over Social Justice using the R.A.C.E.S. Strategies

  • Interact with Slam Poetry by listening to a Guest Speaker and writing their own Slam.

LITERACY UPDATE: WEEK OF NOVEMBER 5- NOVEMBER 9

This week in Literacy, students will:
  • Continue reading in their Reading Groups (I Am Malala)
  • Begin filling in their Group Role's Worksheet(s)
  • Discuss "Sharia" in their Reading Groups (their first group discussion, all before were class discussions for this unit)
  • Learn how Song Lyrics are actually Forms of Poetry
    • Analyze 1-2 Social Justice Song Lyrics for their Poetry Portfolio
