Some big changes are happening in math this quarter, and I am excited to work with my new group!

Activities:
  • Establishing a growth mindset in math

I hope everyone is enjoying the week off!  Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate the holiday.
This week might be a good time for students to get caught up on any missing/incomplete assignments.  Most assignments can be found either on my class pages or in student OneNote files, which are accessible online through Office365.

Unit: Parts of the Whole
Big Idea: Operations with Fractions
 
Assessment - Thursday & Friday
Topics:
  • Ordering/comparing fractions
  • Equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions
  • Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators
    • use LCM to find common denominator
    • anything done to denominator must also be done to numerator
    • add numerators
  • Multiply fractions
  • Divide fractions
    • keep first fraction, change sign to multiplication, flip second fraction to the multiplicative inverse/reciprocal
  • Change between improper fractions and mixed numbers

Week of Sept. 24

Big Idea: Understanding Decimals as "Parts of a Whole" and Dividing Decimals
 
Students continue to see decimals as a vague concept.  We are working to develop a concrete understanding of decimals as real numbers.  We are also continuing to work on decimal division.
 
Check back on Friday for some resources for optional, additional practice to try out over the break.

Unit: Parts of a Whole     Week: 2
 
Big Idea: Operations with decimal numbers
 
Lessons/Activities:
  • Review addition & subtraction of multi-digit decimal numbers
  • Review multiplication of multi-digit decimal numbers
  • How to divide with a decimal in the divisor
Other notes:
Calculation with decimal numbers is a good way to practice the processes of multi-digit multiplication and long division.  Students who did not show proficiency on our recent quiz may benefit from additional support and practice at home.
