In math this week we will finish up measurement, practicing with a ruler, comparing length, and on Wednesday doing the end of unit assessment.

Continue reviewing basic math skills such as adding and subtracting.  One thing you can do at home with your student is flash card games.  Usually you can pick up addition and subtraction cards at the dollar store or you can always make your own!

12/10/2018

This week in math we will be working on measurement.  Our focus will be on lining the items up correctly and putting up to 3 items in order from short to long and then long to short.

Continue practicing addition and subtraction facts at home as they are a critical skill moving forward in math and fluency will give students both confidence and a strong foundation.  Try practicing math facts in the car or while grocery shopping.  You can say a problem and then your student will answer it as quickly as they can.

Hello!

Recently I have been sending more work home with students as we have gotten into harder concepts in subtraction, especially when students are struggling with the idea at first.  This is marked as homework and I encourage families to work on these pages for additional practice.  However these pages are not graded and the students will not be marked down if they are not returned.  It is not intended to add additional stress but to let you know if your student is struggling and give you the resources to practice skills that may need more work.  If you have questions about work coming home please let me know.

This week in math we will be moving into measurement.  Students will take a pretest on Monday to see what they already know before moving into the unit.  The first week we will cover comparing items of different lengths and putting them in order from short to tall and tall to short.

If your student is still struggling with addition and subtraction facts please continue working on these at home.  I will work with students in small groups as often as I can but additional support at home will be key to helping them catch up. Over the next few days I will post additional resources for addition and subtraction practice.

Math - Break Practice

Hello Families,

When we return from Thanksgiving break we will be moving through the last bit of subtraction and then moving on to measurement.  Some students are still struggling with their basic addition and subtraction facts.  If you could support your students at home with helping them get ready to move forward that would be very beneficial for them.

If you are unsure of your students current progress please review the assignments that came in today's Friday Folder.  This will give you a better idea of what they are still struggling with.  Thank you so much for all you do to support your students learning at home!

11/13/2018

In math this week we will be focusing on subtraction and using addition to help us figure out subtraction problems.  We will also be looking at different ways to write subtraction fact families (such as 7 - 2 = 5 & 7 - 5 = 2).

At home continue to practice addition facts to build fluency and improve.  These foundation skills are super important as students move forward in math.

11/5/2018

In math this week we will be working on addition skills.  Using what we know about number and how they work to develop fluent adding strategies and during workshop investigating how we can figure out answers to 'tougher' addition problems.

10/29/2018

This week we will be taking our post test and developing fluency of number combinations.  We will be working on introducing some addition skills and be looking at representing addition problems with manipulatives and pictures.

We are also working on practicing counting by 5's.  If you want to practice at home here is one of the videos we use in class.

10/22/2018

In math this week we will be focusing on different ways to make a number and starting to work on writing addition sentences. We will use number bonds and domino activities to support visual learning and help students understand the concepts around composition of numbers (how numbers make up another number and can be broken down into other numbers, such as 4 and 3 go together to make 7 and 7 can be broken into parts, such as a 4 and a 3).

10/15/2018

Welcome back!  I hope everyone enjoyed the break.  This week we will be working on taking what we know about numbers and working with addition problems as well as looking at different ways that numbers can be broken up.  An example of this would be that 3 + 7 = 10 and so does 5 + 5 = 10.

9/24/2018

This week I will be checking in with students to see how they are progressing through the unit.  We will be working on different ways to show a number using miniputlatives such as dice and dominoes.

9/17/2018

In math this week I will be introducing students to number bonds and using these to create simple addition problems.  We have been working on counting forward and backward and will continue to work on this skill as the students need a lot of practice.  At home you can work on counting items and counting backward to support your students at school.

In math this week we are doing the pretest for the next unit which will have students further exploring and manipulating numbers in number lines and on the 120's chart.  Students will look at numbers as 2 parts of a whole number, missing numbers, and practice counting backwards fluently.

In Math this week we will continue to review and extend our understanding of number sense as we continue working on the classroom routines.  This week students will be going through all 3 parts of our math block, calendar, workshop, and centers/small group.  At the end of the week students will be taking the post test for the unit and also the pre test for the next unit to identify which skill areas they need to focus on.

If you missed curriculum night please look at my advocacy page for the power point presentation.  I am working on separating each section out for the subjects but it will be posted to my advocacy page until I have that completed.

Welcome to Math

Hello!
Welcome to math.  This week we will be working on number sense and counting skills.  Students took a pretest to determine which areas they needed to work which will guide their center work on small group work.  Students will be spending some time this week learning about our calendar math routines and working on developing number sense and fluency through that work.

Come join us for curriculum night this Thursday from 7 - 8 to find out more about what we will be learning in math this year.
