Mrs. Hackleman's Math 5/28/19-5/31/19

In the upcoming week of May 28th, students will finish our geometry unit. They will review angles, lines, triangles, quadrilaterals, 3D shapes and then take a unit assessment.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 5/20/19-5/23/19

In the upcoming week of May 20th, students will learn about the attributes of 3D shapes. They will identify and compare shapes by edges, vertices and faces. We will also spend time looking back at our geometry unit and reviewing what they have learned.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 5/13/19-5/17/19

In the upcoming week of May 13th, students will continue in our geometry unit focusing on triangles. We will study the types of triangles and different angles. Ask your student if they can find quadrilaterals and triangles in nature. Can they describe the lines and angles?

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 5/6/19-5/10/19

In the upcoming week of May 6th, students will begin our geometry unit. We will start the unit by focusing on the attributes of quadrilaterals.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 4/29/19-5/3/19

In the upcoming week of April 29th, students will take their unit test on bar graphs, line plots and picture graphs. We will move on to looking at data represented in graphs and determining the probability of occurrences within that data.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 4/22/19-4/26/19

In the upcoming week of the 22nd, students will continue our graphing unit with bar graphs and picture graphs. We will begin looking at how to analyze the data from graphs using the range, median, mode and outlier.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 4/15-4/19

In the upcoming week, students will show data on a line plot using fractions as well as start picture graphs. We are also incorporating measuring skills in this unit, so this would be a great opportunity to ask your child to measure items using a ruler.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math Week of 4/8/19-4/12/19

When we return from Spring break we will jump right into our graphing unit. After the pre-assessment we will begin with the purpose of graphs, how they are useful, the components of a graph and then begin line plots.

Ask your student what line plots are used for!

Mrs. Hackleman's Math Week of 3/18/19-3/20/19

Hello Westgate Families,
In the upcoming week of March 18th, students will review quarter 3 units and take a short test on the material. Students will also be updating their digital portfolios and reflecting on the area and perimeter unit that we just finished up.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math Week of 3/11/19-3/15/19

Hello Westgate Families,
In the upcoming week of March 11th, students will be finishing up our area and perimeter of plane figures unit. We will focus on finding the perimeter of other polygons (so far we have just done rectangles and squares). There will be a unit test next week as well that will be shared at conferences.

Ask your student if they can give you the multiplication sentence to solve the area of a square or rectangle. How does length X width show the area?

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 3/4/19-3/8/19

Hello Westgate Families,
In the upcoming week of March 4th, students will continue working on our area and perimeter of plane figures unit. We will focus on using area and perimeter in real world situations and how they can be used in different ways and purposes.  Ask your student to measure a square or rectangular object, then find the perimeter and area!

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 2/25/19-3/1/19

Hello Westgate Families,
In the upcoming week of February 25th, students will continue working on our area and perimeter of plane figures unit. Ask your child what the difference between area and perimeter is, and if they can give you an example using a square.

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 2/15/19-2/22/19

Hello Westgate Families,
This week in math we focused on estimating and converting the volume of objects. We also focused on the estimating and converting the mass of objects in the metric system and customary system. The workshop problems were mainly word problems that required them to use more than one operation. Next week we will introduce plane figures and begin looking at area and perimeter!

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 2/8/19-2/14/19

Hello Westgate Families!
This week in math we looked at the two different systems of measurement, the customary system as well as the metric system. After distinguishing the difference between the two, we focused on the liquid units of measurement in the customary system. They practiced converting gallons to quarts, pints, cups and ounces.
Next week will we look at measuring liquid using the metric system!

Mrs. Hackleman's Math 2/1/19-2/9/19

Hello Westgate Families!
This week we had our mini unit on time. It's a lot in a short amount of time, but overall they did very well and met the objectives. We focused on reading an analog clock, a.m. and p.m., converting days to hours, hours to minutes and minutes to seconds. I offered a few extensions into elapsed time word problems. You may see some incomplete work come home in Friday folders, it is not homework unless marked. The worksheets were mainly the challenge questions and extensions.

Next week we are beginning our measurement unit which will go for about 3 weeks. We will start with measuring and estimating liquid volumes with some fun hands on activities. This is a great time for some real world application in the kitchen!
