Wonder Update: Reading at Home

It has been a good first week learning routines, previewing Wonder and getting into the first few pages and discussion questions. I appreciate the writing students are doing for their warm-ups and look forward to reading those this weekend.

As we start reading Wonder, I want all students to be doing some reading at home. I want the class to read roughly 100 pages per week. There will be some time to read in class, but I don't believe that will be enough. If students read some each day, including the weekend, the would need to read about 14 pages per day. Hopefully the story and the themes within are motivating students to read ahead. Feel free to look in at the discussion questions as there are many great topics for discussions both at home and school.

We will continue working on the Article of the Week, Wonder and then next week start layering in Grammar Lessons.

Weekly Update - August 13

This week, students will start switching to Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science classes. We will have the rosters up in the POD Monday morning and will make sure we take time to talk about and practice these transitions. As students move into their new classes, it will also be important to take some time develop community, routines and norms. We will also be introducing our new organizational tools surrounding student notebooks and folders.

For Language Arts, students will be introduced to their first Article of the Week assignment. We will also introduce the first book of the year; Wonder. This week students will do some previewing of the text and start the first 20 pages of the book. This unit will focus on Point of View, Theme and Character Development. We are really looking forward to this unit, as all 4 classrooms will be reading and discussing the book. We hope this crates a bigger buzz around the POD as we look at the Theme of Acceptance.
