Objectives:

Topic 2.1 Innovation Boosts Growth

  • Explain how new inventions, scientific discoveries, and technological innovations fueled growth and improved the standard of living.
  • Describe the impact of industrialization in the late 1800’s.

Topic 2.2 Big Business Rises

  • Analyze different management innovations that businesses used to increase their profits.
  • Describe the public debate over the pros and cons of big business. 
  • Explain how the government took steps to block abuses of corporate power.

Topic 2.3 Organized Labor Movement

  • Assess the impact of business practices on workers in the late 1800’s. 
  • Compare the goals and strategies of the first labor unions. 
  • Analyze the causes and effects of strikes in the late 1800’s.

Objectives:

Topic 1.1 Plans for Reconstruction

  • Explain the reasons why a plan was needed for Reconstruction of the South. 
  • Compare the strengths and weaknesses of the plans of Lincoln, Johnson, and Congress.
  • Describe Johnson’s political difficulties and impeachment. 

Topic 1.2 Reconstruction Changes the South

  • Explain how Republicans gained control of southern state governments. 
  • Analyze how freedmen adjusted to freedom and the role of the Freedmen’s Bureau.
  • Evaluate the South’s new economic system and its impact on poor farmers.
  • Summarize efforts to limit African Americans’ rights and the federal government’s response.

Topic 1.3 Reconstruction's Impact

  • Explain why Reconstruction ended. 
  • Evaluate the successes and failures of Reconstruction.
  • Describe the experiences of African Americans in the changing South. 
  • Assess how whites created a segregated society in the South and how African Americans responded.
