Hi people! This week we will wrap up Topic 6 with our first DBQ essay as our assessment.

Objectives:

Topic 6.4 The Late Middle Ages

  • Explain how the Black Death had disastrous social and economic effects, spreading throughout Europe during the mid-fourteenth century. 
  • Describe how the Great Schism of the Catholic Church caused great political conflict and left Europe divided for four decades.
  • Cite evidence as to why England and France waged the long, violent Hundred Years’ War.  
  • Analyze the reasons why France, England, and Spain emerged as new monarchies by the late 1400s.

Topic 6 Middle Ages DBQ

  • Students will be able to construct a well-organized 5-paragraph DBQ (Document-Based Question) essay analyzing the key social, economic, and religious developments of the Middle Ages.
  • Students will synthesize information from primary and secondary sources, develop a thesis statement, and support their arguments with specific evidence drawn from the provided documents, demonstrating an understanding of the complexities and significance of this historical period.

Objectives:

Topic 6.1 Peasants, Trade, and Cities

  • Describe the process of how new farming practices supported population growth, and the revival of trade led to a money-based economy and the rise of cities. 
  • Describe life under the manorial system of the Middle Ages in which serfs worked the lands of lords.
  • Explain how the revival of trade during the High Middle Ages gave rise to a money economy and the growth of cities, which became centers for manufacturing and trade.

Topic 6.2 Medieval Christianity

  • Describe how, under strong leadership, the Catholic Church reached the height of its political power and became a dominant and forceful presence in medieval society. 
  • Explain how new monastic orders emerged as religious enthusiasm spread through Europe. 
  • Describe the reasons why ordinary people observed the Church’s sacraments, venerated saints, and took pilgrimages to holy shrines.

Topic 6.3 Culture of the High Middle Ages

  • Explain how technological innovations made Gothic cathedrals possible, while an intellectual revival led to the formation of universities.
  • Explain the importance of medieval university students applying scholasticism to the study of theology. 
  • Discuss why troubadour poetry and the heroic epic poem were popular forms of vernacular literature in the twelfth century.

Objectives:

Topic 5.3 The Growth of European Kingdoms

  • Explain how during the High Middle Ages, monarchs began to extend their power and build strong states. 
  • Discuss why King John of England put his seal on the Magna Carta in 1215, recognizing the rights of his nobles, and keeping the English monarch from ever becoming an absolute ruler.
  • Describe why unlike England and France, the lands of Germany and Italy did not become united during the Middle Ages. 
  • Explain how the Slavic peoples settled in central and eastern Europe, forming new kingdoms.

Topic 5.4 Byzantine Empire and the Crusades

Describe how the Byzantine Empire created a unique civilization that was eventually weakened by the Crusades. 

Explain how the Eastern Roman Empire evolved into the smaller Byzantine Empire, which created a unique civilization in the eastern Mediterranean.

Explain how the Macedonians expanded the Byzantine Empire, but new threats arose in the late eleventh century. 

Describe why the Crusades had a significant effect on medieval society in both the East and the West.

Week 6

This week we will conclude our Ancient Civilizations Project and begin Topic 5: Emerging Europe and the Byzantine Empire.

Objectives:
Ancient Civilizations Project
  • Explore the art and culture of an ancient civilization and explain what they reveal about that society.
  • Create an original art piece inspired by the art and cultural traditions of their chosen civilization.
  • Analyze historical evidence and construct two written responses (SAQs) using specific evidence from their research.
  • Connect art, culture, and history to better understand the achievements and values of ancient civilizations.

Topic 5.1 Transforming the Roman World

  • Explain how the new European civilization combined Germanic, Roman, and Christian elements. 
  • Describe why the Frankish kingdom was the strongest of the early German states and developed new laws based on the importance of family in Germanic society. 
  • Explain how the Bishop of Rome became the leader of the Christian Church. 
  • Discuss how Charlemagne expanded the Frankish kingdom and created the Carolingian Empire.

Topic 5.2 Feudalism

  • Describe how the collapse of central authority in Europe led to a new political order known as feudalism. 
  • Compare and contrast the methods used by Vikings, Magyars, and Muslims while invading Europe during the ninth and tenth centuries.

Topic 2.3 Islamic Civilization and Culture

Topic 3.2 African Society and Culture

  • Understand that African society was centered on village and family life, with distinct religious beliefs and a rich culture. 
  • Explain why African society was strongly influenced by values and customs, such as the importance of the family, common ancestors, and community education. 
  • Describe why Africa’s rich culture of paintings, carvings, sculpture, music, and dance often served a religious purpose.
