 We are excited to begin our next math unit! Here is a quick look at what your child will be learning and how you can support their learning at home. 

 Dates of Unit - August 17-September 25

Standards We Are Learning:

• Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangle or decomposing into triangle and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving read-world and mathematical problems. 
• Represent three-dimensional figures using nets made up of rectangles and triangles and use the nets to find the surface are of these figures.  Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems. 
• Write, read and evaluate expression in which letters standing for numbers. 
• Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. 

Students will learn to: 

• find the area of a parallelogram with whole number side lengths by 
• find the area of triangles and other polygons
• use nets to find surface area
• work with algebraic expressions
• write and evaluate expressions with exponents
• find greatest common factor and least common multiple

• How will understanding theses math themes help me in the real world?

 Throughout this unit, students will think about: 

• You can use what you know about the area of other two-dimensional figures and to find the surface area of three-dimensional figures
• You can use what you know about writing, interpreting, and evaluating numerical expressions to understand how to work with algebraic expressions.
• you can apply your understanding of multiplication to evaluate expressions that include exponents and to find the greatest common factor and the least common multiple of two whole numbers

In this unit, the students will be exploring both geometry both area and surface area as well as algebra specifically algebraic expressions and using powers of ten.
