Math October 24

This week we started working on lesson 4 session 2 of iReady.  The children are working on multiplication using area models and moving to the standard algorithm. We reviewed simple multiplication using arrays and area models.  At first, the students struggled a bit, but after using manipulatives and other methods we are slowly getting more solid. Students are practicing multiplying 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers.   I have provided a link to the iReady parent letter for lesson 4. Please let me know if you cannot connect to it.

September 2026

Math Volume Unit

Dear Families,

We are excited to begin our next math unit! Here is a quick look at what your child will be learning and how you can support their learning at home.

Dates of Unit : September

Standards We Are Learning

Students will learn to: Find the volume of rectangular prism. They will be able to explain teh difference between perimeter, area, and volume.

Standards addressed: 5.MD.C3a, 5.MD.C3b, 5.MD.C.4, 5.MD.C.5, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.OA.A.1, 5.NBT.B.6, 5.NBT.B.5b

Essential Questions

Throughout this unit, students will think about: How are area and volume connected? How can I look at the prism in layers?

Unit Overview

In this unit, students will learn about ____Volume________________________.

Students will have opportunities to solve problems, use models and strategies, explain their thinking, and apply their learning to real-world situations.

Key learning goals include Find the volume of a rectangular prism by filling it with unit cubes or modeling the problem with unit cubes. By using the formula Lengths x Width x Height (V= l x w x h). By finding the volume by counting improvised units. Find the third dimension of a rectangular prism when only given two of the dimensions. Use addition of layers to find volume. Multiply multiple digits. Use the distributive property to break apart factors.  Divide multiple digits. Use multiplication and division to solve inverse operations and estimations.

Key Vocabulary

Please encourage your child to use these words when talking about math:

_Cubic Unit_____ | _plane figure____ | ___rectangular prism________

______Volume___ | _____base____ | _____Distributive property___

__Algorithm____ | ___factor__ | ___product____|____partial product_

|___Inverse Operations___|

How Will We Know What Students Understand?

Students will demonstrate their learning through:

Class discussions and math conversations

Hands-on activities and models

Independent practice

Problem-solving tasks

Quick checks/exit tickets

Written explanations

Unit assessment

☐ Other: ______________________________________

Teachers will use this information to celebrate student progress and provide additional instruction or practice when needed.

Try It at Home!

Here are a few simple ways you can reinforce this unit at home:

  1. Ask your child:

“What is volume?   What is the difference between volume and area?”

  1. Try this activity:Stack random objects by Length x Width x Height and calculate the volume.

  1. Look formath in everyday life:Reading the volume amounts in bottles.

Thank You for Partnering With Us!

Your encouragement and conversation at home make a difference.

Thank you for supporting your child's learning!

Welcome to 5th grade math with Ms. Muftic

Hello,

I am so excited to be your student's math teacher! This year we will be using new curriculum from i-ready. Students will have math workbooks. They will be responsible for taking care of these workbooks. This will be where a majority of their work will be assigned.

if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
