Science and Social Studies - Month of October
During October, students will explore the wonders of the natural world through the life cycle of a pumpkin and learn about different cultures and traditions through our Holidays Around the World unit. These topics will encourage curiosity, observation, cultural awareness, and an appreciation for the world around us!
🌱 Science: The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin
In Science, students will investigate how pumpkins grow and change throughout their life cycle. We will explore the different stages of a pumpkin's growth, from a tiny seed to a fully grown pumpkin.
Students will learn about:
- The Pumpkin Life Cycle: Seed → Sprout → Vine → Flower → Green Pumpkin → Mature Pumpkin.
- What Plants Need to Grow: How sunlight, water, air, and nutrients help plants grow and thrive.
- Parts of a Pumpkin: Identifying the stem, skin, pulp, seeds, and other parts of a pumpkin.
- Observing Changes: Describing how pumpkins change in size, shape, color, and appearance as they grow.
- Sequencing: Putting the stages of a pumpkin's life cycle in the correct order.
Through discussions, illustrations, and hands-on activities, students will practice making observations, asking questions, and describing what they notice about the natural world.
🌎 Social Studies: Holidays Around the World
In Social Studies, students will explore how people around the world celebrate different holidays and traditions. We will learn that families and communities have unique customs, celebrations, and ways of honoring what is important to them.
Students will focus on:
- Cultural Awareness: Learning that people around the world celebrate different holidays and traditions.
- Similarities & Differences: Comparing how families and communities celebrate.
- Respect & Appreciation: Understanding that traditions may look different from our own and that all cultures deserve respect.
- Community & Family Traditions: Recognizing how celebrations bring people together and create meaningful memories.
- Geography Connections: Exploring different places around the world where traditions and celebrations take place.
Our goal is to help students develop curiosity, kindness, and an appreciation for the diversity of our world.
