Dear Families,

We are excited to begin our first Social Studies unit! In this unit, students will learn how communities work together to solve problems and how citizens can make a difference in their communities.

🏛️ What Will We Be Working On?

Students will learn to:

• 🗣️ Practice civil discourse — listening to others, sharing ideas respectfully, and understanding viewpoints that may be different from their own.
• ⚖️ Understand the difference between rights and responsibilities.
• 🏙️ Learn about local government, including mayors, city councils, and other community leaders.
• 💰 Explore how taxes help pay for community services such as roads, parks, libraries, and other public services.
• 🗳️ Learn how elections and voting help communities choose leaders.
• 🤝 Understand how different people and groups help shape and improve their communities.
• 📜 Explore how people and events from the past have influenced communities today.

💡 Our Big Idea

Being a good citizen means more than following rules. Students will learn that everyone has rights, responsibilities, opinions, and an important role to play in their community.

We will practice listening to different perspectives, respectfully sharing our own ideas, and working together to find solutions to problems.

Ask your child:

“What is one problem in our community?”
“What could people do to help solve it?”
“What is a right? What is a responsibility?”
“Why is it important to listen to people who have different opinions?”

You can also talk about local leaders, community services, or decisions happening in your neighborhood.
