Course Description

Dear Families,

We're excited to begin Unit 1 in i-Ready Math! This unit focuses on place value and understanding multi-digit numbers, which are essential skills for third-grade math success. Students will build a strong foundation that will support them throughout the year as they tackle more complex math concepts.

🌟 Our Essential Question

How can understanding place value help us work with and solve problems using larger numbers?

🔢 What Will We Be Working On?

During Unit 1, your child will work on several key topics:

🏠 Understanding Place Value

Students will:

  • Read and write numbers up to 1,000.
  • Identify the ones, tens, and hundreds places.
  • Explain the value of each digit in a number.
  • Understand that 10 ones = 1 ten and 10 tens = 1 hundred.
  • Break numbers apart in different ways using place value.

⚖️ Comparing & Ordering Numbers

Students will learn how to compare numbers by looking at their place values.

They will practice using:

< less than
> greater than
= equal to

🎯 Rounding Numbers

Students will practice rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100.

We will learn how rounding can help us:

  • Estimate answers.
  • Quickly make sense of numbers.
  • Decide if an answer is reasonable.
  • Solve real-world problems.

➕➖ Adding & Subtracting

Students will begin working with multi-digit addition and subtraction.

They will explore different strategies, including:

  • Breaking numbers apart by place value.
  • Using models and drawings.
  • Using place-value strategies.
  • Regrouping when necessary.
  • Checking whether an answer makes sense.

🧩 Solving Word Problems

Math isn't just about getting an answer!

Students will practice reading a problem, figuring out what it is asking, choosing a strategy, solving it, and explaining their thinking.

🏠 How Can You Help at Home?

Here are a few simple ways you can reinforce what we're learning in class:

🔢 Make Numbers Part of Everyday Life

👀 Ask About Place Value

🎯 Practice Rounding

🫙 Play Estimation Games

🛒 Use Real-Life Math

🌟 Our Goal for Unit 1

By the end of this unit, students will have a stronger understanding of how numbers are built and how place value helps us work with larger numbers.Thank you for partnering with us as we build strong, confident mathematicians! 🔢✨

Happy Math-ing!
