📚 Module 3: Our Nation’s Story

We are excited to begin HMH Literacy Module 3! Throughout this unit, students will explore the essential question:

✨ How do historic places, documents, and symbols represent our nation?

Throughout the module, students will read a variety of texts that explore important people, places, documents, and symbols connected to our nation’s history. Students will learn how things like the American flag, the Liberty Bell, historic places, and important documents can represent our country’s history, values, and ideas.

📖 Reading Skills
Students will practice:

• Identifying the main idea and key details
• Summarizing what they read
• Making connections between different texts
• Using details and evidence from texts to support their thinking
• Building an understanding of how historical texts communicate information

✏️ Writing Skills
Students will use what they learn from their reading to write about important ideas and information, practice organizing their thoughts, and support their writing with details from texts.

🔤 Phonics & Word Study
Throughout the module, students will continue strengthening their phonics skills and working with spelling patterns, including dge, qu, and ge sounds and patterns.

🗣️ Vocabulary
Students will encounter and practice academic and content-specific vocabulary, including words such as independence, declaring, endowed, and presented. They will learn how to use these words to better understand historical texts and communicate their own ideas.

🇺🇸 Big Idea of the Module
By the end of the unit, students will have a stronger understanding of how historic places, documents, and symbols help tell the story of our nation. They will use their reading, writing, vocabulary, and discussion skills to think critically about the meaning and importance of these pieces of our history.
