Dear Families,

We are excited to begin our next literacy module! Over the next few weeks, we will be diving into Module 2: The Power of Words.

In this module, students will explore how words can be powerful tools for communicating ideas, sharing experiences, and influencing others. We will read a variety of texts while learning how authors use language, details, and text structure to communicate important messages. Our goal is to help students become thoughtful readers who can understand an author's message and explain their thinking using evidence from the text.

We will return to this question throughout the module as we explore different texts and discover how people use words to communicate ideas, share their experiences, and make an impact.

💬 What Will We Be Working On?

Understanding Main Ideas: Students will learn how to:

• Identify the main idea of a text.
• Find important details that support the main idea.
• Explain what they learned from a text.
• Summarize important information.
• Identify the most important information in a passage.

🔍 Reading Like a Detective: Good readers don't just read the words on the page—they look for clues!

Students will practice:

• Asking and answering questions about what they read.
• Making inferences using clues from the text and what they already know.
• Finding evidence in the text to support their thinking.
• Determining the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases.
• Paying attention to an author's word choices and how they affect the meaning of a text.

📝 Writing About Reading

Students will continue practicing how to write about what they read. They will work on:

• Answering questions in complete sentences.
• Writing clear responses about a text.
• Identifying important information and details.
• Using text evidence to support their ideas.
• Organizing their thoughts into a clear response.
• Explaining how and why their evidence supports their thinking.

🗣️ Vocabulary & Word Work

As we read, students will encounter new and interesting words. We will practice:

• Using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
• Using prefixes, suffixes, and roots to help understand new words.
• Exploring multiple-meaning words.
• Using new vocabulary when speaking and writing.
• Paying attention to how an author's word choices help communicate an idea or message.

🏠 How Can You Help at Home?

You can easily support these skills during your child's regular reading time!

Try asking:

“What is the main idea of what you read?”
“What details helped you figure that out?”
“What did you learn?”
“What evidence from the text supports your answer?”
“What does this word mean? What clues helped you figure it out?”
“Why do you think the author chose that word?”
“What message do you think the author wants readers to understand?”

Even a few minutes of talking about a book can help your child practice these important reading skills!
