Unit 1 Math

Dear Families,

We're excited to begin Unit 1 in iReady Math! This unit focuses on place value and understanding multi-digit numbers, which are essential skills for third-grade math success. Students will build a strong foundation that will support them throughout the year as they tackle more complex math concepts.

During Unit 1, your child will work on several key topics:

  • Understanding place value through hundreds, including recognizing the value of each digit in a number
  • Comparing and ordering numbers using place value strategies and symbols like <, >, and =
  • Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100 to estimate and make sense of quantities
  • Adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers using strategies like breaking apart numbers, using place value, and regrouping
  • Solving word problems that require applying these addition and subtraction strategies in real-world contexts

Through the iReady platform, students will engage with personalized lessons that adapt to their individual learning level, helping them build confidence while being appropriately challenged.

How You Can Support at Home

Here are a few simple ways you can reinforce what we're learning in class:

  • Practice reading and writing 3-digit numbers you see around the house—on addresses, prices, or page numbers
  • Ask "What's the value of that digit?" when you see numbers (e.g., "In 347, what does the 3 represent?")
  • Practice rounding with everyday numbers like prices at the store or miles on a road trip
  • Play estimation games—guess how many items are in a jar, then count to check
  • Solve real-life addition and subtraction problems together, like calculating total costs while shopping or figuring out how many more minutes until dinner
  • Celebrate effort and progress, not just correct answers—building a positive math mindset is key!
