Hamilton's Science Update 10-19-26

This week, we are kicking off an exciting new unit in science focused on the Solar System! Understanding our place in space is foundational, and we will begin by observing and analyzing patterns right here on Earth. Specifically, we will be looking at patterns in the sky and how they change over time.

A hands-on part of this learning will involve observing how our shadow moves throughout the day. This simple yet powerful activity helps students visualize the apparent movement of the sun and lays the groundwork for understanding the rotation of the Earth. Please encourage your student to talk about any changes they notice in the sky or with their own shadow when they are outside.

Light And Sound Unit 9/24

During this science unit, we are learning all about light and sound and how they help us understand the world around us! Students will explore how vibrations create sound and how sound can cause objects to vibrate. Through hands-on investigations, students will experiment with different materials and objects to observe vibrations and listen for changes in sound. We will also investigate light and learn that we can only see objects when there is light. Students will explore different sources of light and investigate what happens when light travels through different materials.

Students will also learn about the properties of materials and how they interact with light. We will explore materials that are transparent, translucent, opaque, and reflective and observe how they affect a beam of light. Throughout the unit, students will practice thinking and working like scientists by asking questions, making observations, conducting investigations, collecting evidence, and sharing what they discover. To finish our unit, students will use what they have learned about light and sound to design and build a device that can help people communicate over a distance, giving them an opportunity to use creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills!
