Lesson Objectives:

• Understand the relationship between addition and subtraction
• When efficient, use a counting-on strategy to solve subtraction problems
• Identify, write, and use related addition and subtraction equations to solve subtraction Problems

Math Vocabulary:

• Total  the number you get when you add two or more numbers
• Result  what is there in the end after something has been done
• Part  a piece of a whole

In this unit, your child will use addition facts they know to help them solve subtraction problems.  

When they know one fact, they can use what th know to find a missing number in a related fact.

They will also use number bonds to help see an addition equation.

Activities you can do with your child:

Materials:  10 small household objects such as beans, coins, or paper clips; a cup or sheet of paper.

Help your child find how many objects are hidden.

• Put up to 10 of the objects on the table. Have your child count the objects on the table.  Then hide some of the objects under a cup or a sheet of paper.
• Ask your child this problem using the number of objects you placed on the table: There are 6 beans on the table. You can see some of the beans. The rest are hidden.  How many beans are hidden?
• Ask your child to count on to solve the problem. Encourage your child to count on from the number of objects they see to the number of objects in all.  Your child may raise one finger for each number they say or use a number path to keep track of the hidden objects. Encourage your child to say the numbers aloud as they count.
• Show the hidden objects. Have your child count to see if they are right.

In this lesson your child is learning how modeling can help them solve addition and subtraction word problems.  

Your child can model a problem by acting out the situation or by using objects or drawings to represent parts of the problem.  Your child can also model a problem by writing an equation and describing what each number and symbol represents.

Welcome to first-grade math!  I am so excited to help your child find their love of learning in math!

This week, we will start Unit 1, learning about addition and subtraction within 10. Students will build a strong understanding of numbers by exploring how numbers can be broken apart and put together in different ways.

We will practice using strategies such as counting on, counting back, and making connections to ten. Students will use pictures, objects, number sentences, and hands-on activities to model and solve addition and subtraction problems.

Throughout the unit, we will also learn important math vocabulary, talk about our thinking, and practice explaining how we solved a problem. Students will have opportunities to reflect on their learning and develop positive habits such as perseverance, asking questions, and trying different strategies when a problem feels challenging.

Most importantly, we will connect math to real-life situations so students can see how addition and subtraction are used every day!
