Cell Unit - August
Parents/Guardians,
Here is a further in depth view of what your student will be exploring over the next few weeks in science. I look forward to working with each student this year and having your support in their learning journey.
In this unit, you will conduct an investigation to provide evidence that all living things are made up of cells and use a model to describe cell function. You will then use evidence to describe how plant and animal bodies are systems of interacting subsystems, which are made up of groups of cells. By the end of this unit, you should be able to construct an explanation for the following phenomenon:

Special structures help the Venus flytrap obtain the nutrients it needs to survive.
As you explore the unit, gather evidence in each lesson that relates to the Unit Phenomenon.
Lesson 1 Cell Structure and Function How do cells relate to the overall structure and function of the Venus flytrap?
Lesson 2 Plant Body Systems How does the Venus flytrap function as a system to obtain food?
Lesson 3 Animal Body Systems What similarities exist between animal bodies obtaining food and how a Venus flytrap obtains food?
Students will use our online curriculum HMH to explore and navigate the Energy Unit. They will log on to hmhco.com and use their email as their username and Westgate26 as their password.

Your student is now beginning the unit “Cells and Organization in Organisms.”
Science Summary
- All living things are made of one or more cells. Cells can be described by the types of structures they are made of.
- Multicellular organisms have different levels of organization. For example, in some plants, the stem system helps transport nutrients and other materials through the plant to other parts of the plant system. Plant systems respond to environmental conditions.
- Systems work together to help animals live. Animals use sensory receptors and the nervous system to detect and process environmental stimuli. In response to stimuli, animals may take actions and store the information as memory.
