Energy Unit - August
Parents/Guardians,
Here is a further in depth view of what your student will be exploring over the next few weeks in science. I look forward to working with each student this year and having your support in their learning journey.
In this unit, you will analyze and interpret data to determine the relationship among speed, mass, and the kinetic energy of an object. You will use evidence to argue that energy can be transferred between objects and is conserved. You will also develop models to test design solutions of a toy that transforms potential energy into kinetic energy. By the end of this unit, you should be able to construct an explanation for the following phenomenon:
Unit Phenomenon
Energy is transferred and transformed when a diver jumps off a diving board.
As you explore the unit, gather evidence in each lesson that relates to the Unit Phenomenon.
Lesson 1 Introduction to Energy How is potential energy stored in the diving board?
Lesson 2 Changes in Energy Consider the system made of the diving board and the diver. How does the total energy of the system at the moment before the diver leaves the board compare to the total energy of the system when the diver is at her highest point?
Lesson 3 Engineer It: Transforming Energy How is energy transformed and transferred by the diving board?
Students will use our online curriculum HMH to explore and navigate the Energy Unit. They will log on to hmhco.com and use their email as their username and Westgate26 as their password.

Your student is now beginning the unit “Energy.”
Science Summary
- An object’s energy is constant unless energy is added to or removed from the object. The kinetic energy of an object depends on the object’s speed and mass. Energy can be transformed between different forms and types.
- Energy can be transformed and transferred within a system. For example, when an object collides with another object, energy can transfer from the first object to the second.
- Engineers apply their knowledge of energy transformations when designing solutions. Engineers evaluate their solutions based on how well those solutions satisfy the criteria and constraints. Engineers iteratively test and improve a solution before implementing it.
