It's hard to believe it is the last week of Quarter 1!. We will have a short week this week with parent-teacher conferences Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. Remember that Thursday is a half day and students will need to be picked up starting at 11:30.

If you signed up for a virtual conference on Thursday, I will email you the link on Wednesday. If you signed up for an in-person conference on Thursday, I'll see you in room 203!.

This week students will finish their Ancient Egypt Book of the Dead primary source analysis and take their Ancient Egypt test on Wednesday.

Greetings 7th Grade Families!

This week students will continue to learn about Ancient Egypt. Students will spend time finishing up the Nile River Simulation. They will then take some more notes on Ancient Egypt and then take a closer look at mummification process the ancient Egyptians made famous. We will also be looking at Egyptian hieroglyphics and compare this type of writing to cuneiform used by ancient Mesopotamias.

Greetings 7th Grade Families!

This week students will begin their studies on Ancient Egypt. We will begin our study of Ancient Egypt by taking notes and learning important vocabulary so students develop foundational knowledge about Ancient Egypt. We will end the week by starting a Nile River Simulation where students will choose where they will live along the Nile River, set up a farm, trade their goods, and learn about the geography of the Nile River through different scenarios!

Greetings 7th Grade Families!

Last week students used inquiry envelopes that had pictures and definitions of the geography, government, religion and culture of the ancient river civilizations that they will be studying. They used this information to  make predictions, and create questions about these words and images. They then presented their findings to the class. Students also took notes and learned about Ancient Mesopotamia and some of the important vocabulary words they will need to know. 

This week, students will take a deeper dive into Ancient Mesopotamia by learning about the history of the first written language of Cuneiform and what it was used for. They will then get to make their own Cuneiform tablet. Finally, students will learn about the first set of written laws called Hammurabi's Code and practice using those codes in a courtroom simulation. Students will take a vocabulary quiz on Ancient Mesopotamia on Friday.

Remember that Friday is a half day and students will need to be picked up at 11:30.

Greetings 7th Grade Families!

This week in Social Studies students will be learning about the Neolithic Revolution and how the advent of farming allowed humans to settle in one place. With surplus and specialization, civilizations were able to rise and government, religion, language, law, and new technologies started to emerge.

Students will be taking notes, making judgements, writing, and taking a vocabulary quiz.

We are using our planners and blue homework folders every day, so if there are assignments due or work to completed I am taking time in class to have students write that down.

Greetings 7th Grade Families!

"Mr. Rowan, why do we need to learn this stuff?" This is a question that inevitably comes up each year. This week students will get to think about what life would be like without history and why it is important to study and learn about it. They will also learn the importance of asking good questions as we learn about the difference between Costa's Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 questions. Finally they will participate in a Historical Thinking Escape Room activity. These activities will lay the foundation for the important work they will be doing in Social Studies this year.
