3/4th Grade PE Standards:
Standard 1: Movement Competence and Understanding
- Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
- Demonstrate a variety of motor patterns in simple combinations while participating in activities, games, and sports.
- Perform cross lateral and rhythmic exercises that make a brain-body connection.
- Demonstrate understanding of how the use of self-assessment aids in skill development.
- Identify the major characteristics of mature locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative, and rhythmic skills.
- Provide and receive feedback to and from peers using the major characteristics of mature locomotor and manipulative skills.
Standard 2: Physical and Personal Wellness
- Participate in and understand the benefits of regular physical activity.
- Identify the benefits of sustained physical activity that causes increased heart rate and heavy breathing.
- Understand that the body is composed of water, muscle, bones, organs, fat, and other tissues.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
- Explain how the health-related fitness components are used to improve physical fitness.
- Analyze opportunities for participating in physical activity and actively engage in teacher-directed and independent activities.
Standard 3: Social Emotional Wellness
- Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
- Demonstrate positive social behaviors during physical activity.
- Assess and take responsibility for personal behavior and stress management.
Standard 4: Prevention and Risk Management
- Apply personal safety knowledge and skills to prevent and treat injury.
- Identify ways to prevent injuries during physical activity.
- Demonstrate knowledge of safe practices in a physical activity setting.
Week 1: During the first week of PE we will start by learning rules, routines, and procedures that will be using in my class. We will be covering how to be safe in the gym with various safety rules as well as how to respect one’s self, respect others, and to respect the equipment/gym. This week we’ll start our first unit, which is team building and cooperative games. Students will work together to complete activities, challenges, and how to be a great teammate in various games. Students will also learn how to locate heart rate on at least two different pulse points on the body and explain why the body perspires, the heart beats faster and breathing increases when participating in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Lastly how to measure and record personal heart rate before, during, and after moderate to vigorous exercise.
Week 2: The second week of PE will be the start of our throwing and catching unit. Using various activities, challenges, and games students will learn how to throw and catch to themself or a partner that is stationary or moving. We will also be covering the relationship among the heart, lungs, muscles, blood, and oxygen during physical activity, and learning the benefits of having good cardiovascular endurance. We will also cover how to identify and perform specific exercises that can be done to improve the muscular strength, endurance, and flexability of various muscle groups.
Week 3: In week 3 of PE we will start our soccer unit. Students will learn correct technique/cues to kicking (passing and shooting), dribbling with feet, defending, and the basic rules/strategies of soccer. This week we will also start our Presidential Fitness Testing which will be analyzing/measuring students, endurance, upper body strength, abdominal strength, and flexibility.
Week 4: The last week of the rotation will be our striking unit. Students will learn the cues, strategies, and activities/games that will enhance their striking skills. We will also goal setting and learning how nutrition, sleep, and water intake can affect our fitness goals.
