Semester 2

Welcome back to 5th and 6th Grade Art! As we begin Semester 2, we’ll continue strengthening our understanding of the Elements of Art while diving deeper into the Principles of Design. Get ready to build on what you already know, experiment with new ideas and materials, and challenge yourself creatively as we grow as artists together.

Spring Rotation Schedule (By Advocacy):

  • O’Leary (January 12th – February 6th)
  • Calder (February 9th – March 11th)
  • Lounsbury (March 30th – April 24th)
  • Muftic (April 27th – May 29th)

Spring Semester Curriculum:

  • Project 1: Clay Relief Tiles
    • In this project, students create clay relief tiles inspired by Roman friezes, designing raised images that tell a story. They will explore texture, depth, and pattern while learning basic clay-handling and carving techniques.
    • This project aligns with key National Visual Arts Standards for 5th and 6th grade including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.5 – Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art-making.
      • VA:CR2.1.6 – Experiment with materials, tools, and processes to create expressive works
      • VA:Re7.2.6 – Analyze how art reflects cultural and historical contexts
    • Throughout this hands-on experience, students gain an understanding of historical art forms, refine sculptural skills, and explore storytelling through visual designs.
  • Project 2: Cubism Self Portraits
    • In this project, students create self-portraits inspired by the Cubism art movement, showing multiple perspectives of their face within a single composition. Using watercolor, they explore abstract shapes, overlapping planes, and bold color choices to convey different angles and emotions. This process encourages observation, experimentation, and personal expression.
    • This project aligns with National Visual Arts Standards for 5th and 6th Grade, including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.5 – Combine ideas to generate innovative artwork
      • VA:Cr2.1.6 - Experiment with materials, tools, and processes to create expressive works
      • VA:Re7.1.6 - Analyze how visual elements convey ideas in artworks.
    • Through this project, students strengthen their understanding of perspective, abstraction, and creative problem-solving while expressing their identity in a visually dynamic way.

5th – 6th Grade Art:

Welcome to 5th and 6th Grade Art! This year, students will explore a variety of materials, techniques, and artistic styles while building foundational skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and more. Through hands-on projects and creative challenges, students will develop their artistic voice, think critically about visual art, and learn how to give and receive thoughtful feedback in a supportive studio environment.

Fall Rotation Schedule (By Advocacy):

  • O’Leary (August 4th – August 29th)
  • Calder (September 1st – October 3rd)
  • Lounsbury (October 20th – November 14th)
  • McGinnis (November 17th – December 19th)

Fall Semester Curriculum:

  • Project 1: Pointillism
    • Pointillism is a technique where artists create images using only small, colorful dots. By layering and spacing the dots, students can blend colors, build texture, and form detailed images without traditional lines or shading. This process teaches patience, precision, and color theory.
    • This project aligns with Art Standards, including:
      • VA: Cr2.1.5 – Experiment and develop skills in multiple art-making techniques.
      • VA: Re7.1.6 – Identify and interpret works of art based on visual evidence.
      • VA: Cr3.1.6 – Reflect on and revise personal artwork in response to feedback.
    • Through pointillism, students build artistic discipline and explore how small details contribute to a larger, expressive whole.
  • Project 2: Zentangle Negatives
    • Zentangle is a relaxing drawing method that uses structured patterns to create detailed, abstract art. In this project, students explore positive space (the area filled with patterns) and negative space (the untouched or background area) to create visual balance and contrast. This mindful process promotes focus, creativity, and design awareness.
    • This project aligns with Art Standards, including:
      • VA: Cr1.1.5 – Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art-making.
      • VA: Cr2.1.6 – Demonstrate openness in trying new ideas, materials, and processes.
      • VA: Re7.1.5 – Compare how visual characteristics are used in artworks.
    • Zentangle drawing helps students understand space in art while building confidence in their creative decisions
