Semester 2
Welcome back to 5th and 6th Grade Art! As we begin Semester 2, we’ll continue strengthening our understanding of the Elements of Art while diving deeper into the Principles of Design. Get ready to build on what you already know, experiment with new ideas and materials, and challenge yourself creatively as we grow as artists together.
Spring Rotation Schedule (By Advocacy):
- O’Leary (January 12th – February 6th)

Spring Semester Curriculum:
- Project 1: Clay Relief Tiles
- In this project, students create clay relief tiles inspired by Roman friezes, designing raised images that tell a story. They will explore texture, depth, and pattern while learning basic clay-handling and carving techniques.
- This project aligns with key National Visual Arts Standards for 5th and 6th grade including:
- VA:Cr1.1.5 – Combine ideas to generate an innovative idea for art-making.
- VA:CR2.1.6 – Experiment with materials, tools, and processes to create expressive works
- VA:Re7.2.6 – Analyze how art reflects cultural and historical contexts
- Throughout this hands-on experience, students gain an understanding of historical art forms, refine sculptural skills, and explore storytelling through visual designs.
- Project 2: Cubism Self Portraits
- In this project, students create self-portraits inspired by the Cubism art movement, showing multiple perspectives of their face within a single composition. Using watercolor, they explore abstract shapes, overlapping planes, and bold color choices to convey different angles and emotions. This process encourages observation, experimentation, and personal expression.
