7/8th Grade PE/Team Sports Standards

Standard 1:  Movement Competence and Understanding

  • Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities
  • Combine the critical elements of movement and skills concepts.
  • Apply movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics to learning and performing physical activities.
  • Demonstrate beginning offensive and defensive strategies for individual and team physical activities and sports.
  • Demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
  • Understand and apply game strategies to physical activities and sports.

Standard 2:  Physical and Personal Wellness

  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
  • Identify areas for growth and design personal goals utilizing assessment and program planning concepts.
  • Participate in and understand the benefits of regular physical activity.
  • Identify preferences for lifetime physical activity.
  • Understand and apply principles of physical fitness to create a personal fitness plan and set personal physical fitness goals.

Standard 3:  Social Emotional Wellness

  • Exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings.
  • Demonstrate inclusiveness in and out of classroom settings.
  • Recognize diverse skill performance in self and in others and how diversity affects activities, games, and sport participation.

Standard 4:  Prevention and Risk Management

  • Apply personal safety knowledge and skills to prevent and treat injury.
  • Apply rules, procedures, and safe practices to create a safe school environment with no reinforcement.
  • Understand and utilize safe and appropriate warm-up, pacing, and cool-down techniques for injury prevention and safe participation.
 

Week 1:  During the first week of PE/Team Sports class will start by learning rules, routines, and procedures that will be using in my class.  We will be covering how to be safe in the gym with various safety rules as well as how to respect one’s self, respect others, and to respect the equipment/gym.  We will also start our first unit which will be Teamwork, Cooperation, and strategy Games.  During this unit students will be working together in teams or small groups to participate in different activities and games.  The goal is to build a great foundation of teamwork and cooperation before we start our next unit.  We will also be discussing the term lifetime activity and the principles of physical fitness (S.P.O.R.T.); Specificity, progression, overload, reversibility, and tedium.

Week 2:  This week will be the start of our throwing and catching unit.  Through various games and team sports we will discuss and learn how to use a variety of passes, pivots and fakes; give and go to create open space.  How to select an effective defensive play based on the situation.  How to transition from offense to defense or defense to offense quickly, and also how to reduce open space on defense by staying close to the opponent as he/she nears the goal.  The week students will also engage in a variety of strength and endurance fitness activities, identify moderate to vigorous muscle and bone strengthening physical activities, as well as discuss the importance of maintaining involvement in a physical activity, twice a week, outside physical education class.

Week 3:  This week in 7/8th grade PE/Team Sports we will begin our soccer unit.  In this unit will focus on learning the correct ways to pass and dribble a ball with the feet, as well as the basic rules, and strategies of soccer.  The focus of this unit will be being able to analyze movement patterns, and correct errors, and compare the effectiveness of practicing skills as a whole and practicing skills in smaller parts.  This week we will also start our Presidential Fitness Testing which will be analyzing/measuring students, endurance, upper body strength, abdominal strength, and flexibility. 

Week 4:  This week we will start our striking/volleying unit.  The focus will be on identifying and describe key elements in the mature performance of overhand, sidearm, and underhand striking/volleying through various games, sports, and activities.  This week we will also be designing a warm-up and cool-down regime for a self-selected physical activity, as well as starting our goal setting process.
