Welcome back to 3rd and 4th Grade Art! As we begin Semester 2, we’ll continue reviewing the Elements of Art while exploring exciting new media and methods. Get ready to try new materials, build your skills, and have fun expressing your creativity as we grow as artists together!

Spring Semester Curriculum:

  • Project 1: Clay Totem Poles
    • In this project, students create clay totem poles inspired by the art and storytelling traditions of Indigenous tribes of the Pacific Northwest. Students learn how to stack symbolic figures, use texture and pattern, and shape clay to represent animals that tell their story and express their values. This hands-on process emphasizes cultural respect, craftsmanship, and three-dimensional design
    • This project aligns with key National Visual Arts Standards for 3rd and 4th grade including:
      • VA:Cr2.1.3 – create personally meaningful works of art using a variety of materials
      • VA:Cr2.1.4 – Explore and demonstrate control of tools, materials, and techniques
      • VA:Cn11.1.4 – Recognize how art reflects cultural traditions and community identity.
    • Through this clay project, students deepen their understanding of form and symbolism while learning how art can communicate stories across cultures and generations.
  • Project 2: Printmaking Self Portraits
    • In this project, students create bold, colorful self-portraits inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic pop art. Using Styrofoam plates and markers, they will design a printing surface that is then transferred onto paper, allowing the repetition and experimentation with color combinations. This process introduces basic printmaking while exploring pattern, contrast and personal expression.
    • This project aligns with National Visual Arts Standards for 3rd and 4th Grade including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.3 – Develop ideas for art making using imagination and observation
      • VA:Cr2.1.4 – Experiment and demonstrate control of tools and materials to create artwork
      • VA:Cn10.1.4 – Explore connections between art and personal identity or cultural context.
    • Through this printmaking project, students learn the fundamentals of replication, color experimentation, and how art can communicate individuality in a visually striking way.

3rd and 4th Grade Art:

Welcome to 3rd and 4th Grade Art! This year, students will dive into the world of creativity by experimenting with color, line, shape, and texture. Through fun and engaging projects, they’ll learn about different artists, cultures, and art styles while developing their unique artistic skills. Students will be encouraged to express themselves, take creative risks, and build confidence in their ideas as young artists.

Fall Semester Curriculum:

  • Project 1: Georgia O’Keeffe Flowers
    • Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s bold, close-up flower paintings, students use chalk pastels to create vibrant floral artwork that emphasizes color blending, shading, and scale. By zooming in on natural forms, students explore the beauty of detail and develop a strong sense of composition.
    • This project aligns with Art Standards, including:
      • VA: Cr2.1.3 – Create personally meaningful artwork using a variety of materials.
      • VA: Cr2.1.4 – Explore and demonstrate control of materials, tools, and techniques.
      • VA: Re7.2.4 – Analyze components in visual imagery that convey messages.
    • Through this pastel project, students connect with nature, learn expressive techniques, and celebrate color in a style inspired by one of America’s most iconic artists.
  • Project 2: Romero Britto Paintings 
    • In this project, students create bold and colorful paintings inspired by the pop art style of Romero Britto. Using bright colors, thick outlines, and playful patterns, students explore how simple shapes and joyful designs can express positive emotions.

    • This project aligns with Art Standards, including: 
      • VA: Cr1.1.3 – Elaborate on an imaginative idea for art-making.

      • VA: Cr2.1.4 – Explore and demonstrate control of materials, tools, and techniques.

      • VA: Re7.2.3 – Determine messages conveyed in works of art based on visual characteristics.

    • Through this painting process, students build confidence in color choice, pattern design, and personal expression while celebrating art that radiates happiness.
