Semester 2

Welcome back to Kindergarten Art! It’s Semester 2, and we’re excited to keep learning about the Elements of Art while exploring fun new materials and ways to make art. Get ready to paint, draw, build, and create as we use our imaginations and grow as artists together!

Spring Rotation Schedule (By Advocacy):

  • Lane (March 30th – April 24th)
  • Baker (April 27th – May 29th)

Spring Semester Curriculum:

  • Project 1: Construction Lines
    • In this project, kindergarten students create simple three-dimensional sculptures using construction paper strips. By cutting, folding, curling, and looping paper, students explore how line can move through space to create height, balance, and visual interest. This hands-on activity encourages creativity, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness.
    • This project aligns with the National Visual Arts Standards for Kindergarten including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.K – Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials.
      • VA:Cr2.1.K – Use tools and materials to create art in a safe and responsible way
      • VA:Re7.1.K – Identify and describe elements of art such as line and space.
    • Through this playful sculpture experience, young artists learn that paper can move, bend, and stand in new ways while discovering how lines can exist in three-dimensional space.
  • Project 2: Clay Texture Plates
    • In this project, kindergarten students create clay plates while exploring different textures by pressing, carving, and shaping the surface with tools and their hands. This hands-on activity helps students discover how textures can make art more interesting and expressive.
    • This project aligns with the National Visual Arts Standards for Kindergarten including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.K – Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials.

    • Through this project, students build fine motor skills, creativity, and an early understanding of how tactile qualities enhance art.
  • Project 3: Collage
    • In this project, kindergarten students create colorful abstract collages using cut paper, inspired by Henri Matisse’s “cut-outs.” Students explore shapes, patterns, and composition by arranging and layering paper to express movement and creativity.
    • This project aligns with the National Visual Arts Standards for Kindergarten including:

  • Project 4: Winter Wonderland
    • In this project, kindergarten students create winter landscapes using only black and white colored pencils to explore value—the lightness or darkness of a color. Students learn how shading can show snow, trees, and shadows, helping their drawings feel three-dimensional and full of depth.
    • This project aligns with the National Visual Arts Standards for Kindergarten including:
      • VA:Cr1.1.K – Explore materials and tools through play to make art.
      • VA:Cr2.1.K – Use different tools and techniques safely to create art.
