The first seventeen of which are pertinent to material taught on Monday and Tuesday. While the remaining thirteen will be covered on Wednesday and Thursday.

Math 7 Math 8 Class Update - Week of 10/20/2025 (First week of Q2)

Hello Everyone! Welcome back from fall break! This week we are diving into our third unit of the year, covering angles and triangles. We will be primarily focused on the relationships of angles created by intersecting lines as well as the relationships of angles both on the interior and exterior of triangles. With all that being said, we have four assignments which students will be responsible for this week; The Course Progress Assessment(Monday & Tuesday), the Sections 3.1-3.2 Quiz, this week's notes, and the Week 9 Homework. The homework is due on this coming Monday 10/21/2024 and consists of 20 problems. The first 5 problems are review from the previous quarter, the next 5 problems will cover material taught on Wednesday, and the remaining 10 will be covered on Thursday and Friday. Additionally, please be aware that I will be out of the building from Monday-Wednesday of this week as I will be leading the 5th and 6th grade outdoor education field trip. Mrs. Calder of the 5/6 pod will be substituting in my classroom during these days.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 9/29/2025

Hello Everyone! In all honesty, I'm having trouble accepting that we are already at the end of quarter 1 (how the time has flown.)! During this week, 8th graders will have a field trip on Wednesday to the Colorado history museum and color-games activities on Thursday. However, during class this week, we will first review our performance on the chapter 2 test and then we will open chapter 3 which extends from the material of chapter 2 into angle measurements and intersecting lines. There will be no homework to worry about this week!

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 9/22/25

Hello All! This week, we will conclude our study of chapter 2: Transformations. We will spend the first two days of the week preparing for our test, on Wednesday will take the test, and afterwards we will introduce chapter 3. Students will be responsible for two assignments this week; the Chapter 2 test and the week 8 homework (24 problems or 8 per-night if completed in equal measurements on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.). Please be on the look out for conference sign ups, the link will be in your email this week!

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 9/15/2025

Hello All, This week, our students will continue in their study of transformations as we dive deeper in the subject matter, exploring changes in area and composite shapes within the coordinate plane. Students will be responsible for three assignments this week. Their weekly homework and the sections 2.5-2.7 quiz which will be taken on Wedneday. This week is also important as it is the end of the grading window for quarter one.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 9/8/2025

Hello All! This week, we will be continuing our study of transformations. We will start the week by identifying the types of transformations that fall into the category of "rigid motion". Then, we will start to study dilations, which scale up and down the size of figures. We will have a quiz on the beginning sections of chapter 2 on Tuesday, this week's notes will be due on Friday, and the homework for this week will consist of thirty problems (broken out to between five and six problems per night if completed in equal segments). As we come to the end of the first quarter, we are working to bolster our students' academic fortitude and stamina to adequately prepare them for their high school experience.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 9/2/2025

Hi Everyone! This week, our students will continue their study of transformations in the coordinate plane with a particular focus on reflections. As this is a shorter week, homework will be slightly reduced to account for the time off. Particularly, the homework will consist of 23 problems on the aforementioned subject matter which breaks out to less than 6 problems per week night. Students have a brief quiz on Thursday of this week.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 8/25

This week, our eight graders will be finishing out the first chapter in our curriculum. This chapter has covered equations of various types and gave our students exposure to solving for unknown variables both purely in terms of numbers and in terms of other variables. Once we've finished chapter one, we will end the week with a brief introduction to chapter two. Covering rudimentary geometry within the coordinate plane. Specifically how to translate or "shift" figures in the coordinate plane. This week, students will be responsible for a total of three assignments; The end of chapter 1 quiz, this week's homework, and this week's performance task.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 8/18/2025

During this third week of the year, our eighth grade students will be focusing their attention and energy on sections 1.3 and 1.4 of our curriculum. These sections will still be covering simple equations, but we will be adding on variables to both sides of our equations. This progressive dial up of complexity helps students build familiarity with the tools available to them and provides a platform for them to reflect on skills from previous years as we build into more complex material. Homework for this week will be due next Monday, it will have twenty-five problems. Additionally, we will have a short quiz on the aforementioned sections on Thursday.

Math 8 Class Update - Week of 8/10/2025

Last week, we started by reviewing class, school, and pod policies. In addition, we took our beginning of year pre-course assessment. This test does not count towards your student's final grades. Rather, it's a reference point for me to use in fostering their growth throughout the course of the year. This coming week, we will start our year of learning by creating a solid base to build upon throughout the year. This will begin with one-step(linear) equations and using simple operations to solve them. These concepts will ultimately be a strong precursor to the topics that will we grow into throughout the year. The homework has 25 problems which reflect on previous years of study and will be reviewed throughout this week.

First Week Back 25/26 School Year

Hello Parents and welcome back to another year at Westgate. I'm excited to have the opportunity to teach your students and to help them progress in both their aptitude and enjoyment of mathematics. In this first week back, we will be starting with some administrative work in reintroducing students to the expectations of the classroom as well as providing them with an outline for what can be expected for this coming year. In the latter half of the week, we will be taking our precourse test to develop a benchmark against which we can compare student's base of knowledge at the end of the year. At the beginning of the week, I will be sending home a few documents for you to look over. Particularly, The behavior and expectations student contact for this year, the syllabus for my class, as well as my parent letter which will include several things. Included in the parent letter will be: A brief outline of my philosophy and style of teaching; best method of contact for myself; instructions on how to access assignments, grades, and helpful resources for both homework and additional practice through both Microsoft Teams and Big Ideas Math; and the role I will be asking you to play in your student's acquisition of class material throughout the year. Please review both the behavior and expectations contract as well as the class syllabus with your students. Then, sign both and have your student return them the following day. Thank you so much for the investment and care you put into your child's life and education. Please feel free to reach out if ever you need anything.
