Week of 8/25 5th Grade Social Studies

Greetings 5th Grade Social Studies Families!

You may be challenged to show what you know about the geography of the United States! I sent home a laminated map with dry erase marker and their key they made (or a copy if they weren't able to complete it). Ultimately, it's for them to practice, but I thought I would make it fun for them to challenge family members. Every Monday we'll be studying the states located in each physical region of the United States along with a survey of notable indigenous cultures that adapted to those regions. Please help your child learn the 50 states. I put 37 bonus features to label so they can demonstrate exceeding expectations. They need to score 50 or higher to be proficient. Thank you for partnering with them in US Geography.

Best Regards,
Mr. McGinnis

Week of August 18-22 Social Studies 5th Grade

Greetings Families,

We begin the year split between Geography and History, and understanding the concepts of Timelines and Beginnings of human culture in North America, specifically in regards to the evidence gathered by scientists and the stories past down through indigenous cultures, to create historical narratives we have today.

Every Monday we'll be focusing on labeling and learning the map of the United States of America. Your child will come home with a laminated blank map to practice at home. They will bring home a Key Map they created in class to help them check their accuracy. Thank you for partnering in helping them familiarize themselves with the states and physical features of our country.

I will be assessing their mastery throughout the quarter and grading them on their best performance.

For History, we're using A History of US Revised 3rd Edition Volume 1, The First Americans: Prehistory-1600 by Joy Hakim as a resource to survey the different regions of the United States and the people that lived in them. Classroom projects will come out of this learning that may require getting crafts and making things at home. More details will come regarding these projects.

Thanks for you support. Please reach out by email if you have any questions.

Best regards,
Travis McGinnis
