ELA:

This week we looked at how synthesizing a text can help us comprehend it more easily. 
We met our vocab goal and have learned so many new words already! Our next goal is to learn 7 new words in 20 minutes :) 

 

Next week we will continue on with module two. Students will be evaluating how the genre of a story impacts the way it is told and explained. I love this unit because it has a little bit of every genre! Meaning, most students will be super excited about at least one story.

 

Math:

This week we started learning about numerical expressions and order of operations! Parenthesis were a big learning curve for students and we will keep working on using them. Mrs. Cundari came in again today to teach our math lesson! It is wonderful to have her in here so I can follow up on specific skills with different students. 

 

Next week we will review this chapter and move onto chapter 3 which is adding and subtracting decimals. We will have a huge focus on saying the numbers correctly every single time.

If your students are using a number at home to talk about anything please challenge them or help them to say it correctly!

Parents! First of all, I am so sorry. I have been posting weekly to my pages but turns out I had incorrectly added your emails and very few of you were actually getting my updates. Mistakes happen but I am so sorry for whatever the lack of communication made you feel.

I will likely re post the previous posts sometime next week so you can at least read them. I apologize in advance for the influx of emails from me.

ELA:

This week we had a focus on expository writing. We began understanding the organization and components of them. I have let students pick their own topic to research and write about and let me tell you, I am SO excited to read them.

Next week we will have a more reading comprehension focused week but there will still be space and time for them to work on their writing. We will take our first module assessment next Friday. It is basically just to see what they have grasped during our first unit. Some topic of conversation might be authors purpose, central idea and being able to identify key details in the text.

 

Math:

This week we leveled up our math thinking and processing! We began working with decimals and shifting them into fractions and vice versa. I have linked a song down below that we have started class with. Repetition can be key with this new material so if you have the chance this weekend, watch it with them!

I have also noticed a lot of fear and anxiety in most students when it comes to math. We paused a lesson this week so that I could reiterate to them that I do not care if mistakes are made but I do care if no effort is being made. We came up with our own personal math affirmations to carry with us. I am hoping to continue to practice with them that making mistakes is perfectly normal and I just want to see that they are trying. Many students have been receptive to this very quickly and have even started coming in to complete extra practice during the academic lab! Booyah, we love to see it.

Next week we will wrap up chapter 1 and have a fun review day before testing (likely on Wednesday). We will move into chapter 2 which is all about numerical expressions. There are a few tie ins with science during this chapter and I am so excited 😊

Hi all!

I have had such a great week 2 with your students! They have been working so hard and we are still practicing our routines and procedures every day. 

 

MATH

This week we started Chapter 1: Place value concepts

Weekly affrimation: I can try new things

We learned how to compare numbers, write them out in different forms (standard, expanded and written) and even started using exponents!

Exponents really give students a chance to level up their math thinking. We will continue to work on this next week. If your students ask questions this weekend we are focused on the idea that exponents are NOT repeated addition but rather repeated multiplication.

 

Next week we will continue to practice exponents and look at other place value concepts. Our math affirmation next week is: I can challenge myself.

 

ELA

This week in ELA we continued to examine authors purpose and central idea. We ended the week practicing our test taking skills. These being, reading the questions before listening to the story, picking out key words to listen for and going back to check our answers.

 

Next week in ELA we will continue to work on these skills. Author's purpose being a central focus. We will also continue to work on our super six vocab words! They've been learning some fun ones. :)

Hi all!

I had a fantastic first week with your students! It was a very busy but productive week and I am so proud of all of them for working hard all week. There are so many good things to look forward to this year! I have the same group of students for ELA and Math so this year I have decided to combine my Edlio post so that way you receive one less email (yay!)

 

This week in ELA:

- We completed a narrative writing pre- assessment. I will be conferencing with students in the next few weeks to talk through areas of improvement

- We started our first unit! We have read a few different readings on inventors. Students are working on finding the central idea as well as summarizing these texts. 

 

Next week in ELA:

- Students will have time to write about their inventions they are thinking about!

- They will continue reading with a purpose (summarizing, central idea etc.) 

- On Thursday, students will complete their first reading MAPS test for the year. 

 

This week in math:

- We started of STRONG in math this year! Students began classifying triangles and quadrilaterals. We discovered things like acute, obtuse, and right angles along with how to identify each shape!

 

Next Week:

- On Monday we will continue to review this chapter before having our first assessment on Tuesday. Students will have the ability to use any notes or work they have completed on this. Along with that they will have plenty of support from me!
