Social Studies Update Week of 11/11/24

Greeting 7th Grade Families,

The 7th grade students have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on their artifacts, posters and displays for the World Religion Museum project. Students will present their artifacts and work on Thursday, November 14th. This will be in Room 203 in the 7/8 POD. I would like to invite everyone who can to attend our World Religion Museum on Thursday, November 14th. Each class will be creating a museum during their regularly scheduled class time.

Social Studies Update Week of 11/4/2024

Greeting 7th Grade Families,

The 7th grade students have been hard at work creating their artifacts for the World Religion Museum project. In my weekly Edlio post I stated that the Museum Invite was for Wednesday, November 13th. However, after realizing that students don’t have class on Monday for Veterans Day, I have pushed that back one day to Thursday, November 14th. Students will finish creating their artifacts and planning their museum display this week and next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would like to invite everyone who can to attend our World Religion Museum on Thursday, November 14th. Each class will be creating a museum during their regularly scheduled class time.

7D Museum: 2:30 - 3:00.

Social Studies Update Week of 10/28/24

Greeting 7th Grade Families,
 
We are gearing up for our World Religion Museum project. Students will be choosing a religion, and then researching and creating an artifact used in that religion. Last week students started choosing the religion and creating an artifact planning sheet where they researched two artifacts from the religion of their choice. This week students will complete that planning sheet. They will then choose one of those artifacts to create for the museum. Students will complete a materials list where they list the materials they need to create their artifact. I am asking them to see if there are any materials they have at home which can be used and what materials they will need my help sourcing. They will create an artifact proposal form they will place next to their artifact at the museum. Look for an invitation to come visit the museum later this week. 
On Wednesday, students will take a World Religion Quiz. There will be a study guide posted to Teams and we will review on Tuesday.

Social Studies Update Week of 10/21/24

Greetings Social Studies Families!
Last week students used the important vocabulary words for our World Religion Unit and each table worked together to create a quiz using those words. This week, students will choose and complete two of their classmate's quizzes. Students will complete a short Nearpod video on the 5 World Religions. Students will then create posters for each of the 5 major world religions which include the following information:
  • Beliefs
  • Important people
  • Followers
  • Where they worship
  • Important books
  • Symbol

Social Studies Update Week of 10/14/24

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
This week we will begin by finishing up a few presentations on ancient civilizations that some students didn't get to finish before break. We will then begin a mini-unit on world religions. Students will do some work on important vocabulary around the major world religions and then take notes, complete some readings, and answer questions on Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/23/2024

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
There are a couple of important dates to remember this week.
  • Monday the Fall Conference signup links will be taken down Monday at 4.
  • Monday Advocacy teachers will email Fall MAPS and Quarter 1 Grade Reports.
  • Thursday is a 1 / 2 day of school for Virtual Fall Conferences from            1 - 5pm. 
  • Friday there is no school for In-Person Fall Conferences from 8am - 8pm.
This week students will complete their Ancient Civilizations Research project on Monday. We will then begin presentations on Tuesday.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/16/24

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
 
There are a couple of important dates to remember this week.
  • Monday the Fall Conference signup links will be sent out and you will have a week to choose a conference slot. Each teacher will send out their own conference signup link, so please choose the teachers you want to meet and sign up using their link.
  • Wednesday is the final day to turn in a late or missing work.
  • Friday teachers will be posting final grades for the quarter. Any work done after Friday will be added to Quarter 2 grades.
You can check Infinite Campus or have your student login to Teams to check on their progress. If students complete any missing or incomplete work, it is very important they email their teachers.
 
This week students will finish writing their 11-15 sentence constructed response about how the Nile River shaped ancient Egypt. Students will then begin working on an Ancient Civilization choice research project. They will research a chosen civilization and complete a PowerPoint presentation highlighting their research. They can choose from the following:
  • Ancient China
  • Ancient India
  • Ancient Rome
  • Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Mesopotamia
  • Ancient Egypt
  • Other Choice: African Kingdoms, The Middle Ages, Islamic Empires, etc.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/9/24

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
 
Last week students completed their work with the history of the writing system called cuneiform. This week students will analyze 5 different primary and secondary sources to answer questions about each source. They will use their answers and evidence from the sources to answer the following questions:
  1. How is Egypt the gift of the Nile?
  2. How did the Nile shape ancient Egypt?
They will then write an 8-12 sentence constructed response using the RACES strategy:
  • Restate the question
  • Answer the questions (Make a claim)
  • Cite evidence from 3 sources
  • Explain each piece evidences supports your answer/claim
  • State your claim in a different way and leave a final persuasive statement.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/3/24

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
 
Last week students completed their work with the Mesopotamian Civilization. This week students will learn about the history of the writing system called cuneiform and create their own clay tablet with a message in this language system. We will then analyze different primary and secondary sources to better understand the Ancient Egyptian Civilization.

Social Studies Update Week of 8/26/24

Greetings 7th Grade Families!
 
Last week students completed their work with G.R.A.P.E.S. and were introduced to changes that happened during the Neolithic Era where humans developed farming and domestication of animals to move from the hunter-gatherer lifestyle to one where they stayed in one place. This was the crucial step that allowed us to form cities, create government structure, and specialization in labor. From these places is where civilization developed.
 
This week students will be introduced to the Mesopotamian Civilization where they will analyze secondary sources, identify the G.R.A.P.E.S. in this civilization and test their knowledge on what they have learned. Students will then take a dive in the writing system called cuneiform and create their own clay tablet with a message in this language system.

Social Studies Update Week of 8/19/24

Greetings Social Studies Families!
 
Last week students were introduced to the characteristics of a civilization through the acronym G.R.A.P.E.S. By understanding geography, religion, achievements, politics, economics and society, students can better understand the civilizations we will be uncovering.
 
To better understand the world we live in today, students will be using what they've learned about G.R.A.P.E.S. to create a one page research paper on a country of their choosing using these characteristics of a civilization as a guide for their research. This will be due on Tuesday.
 
We will then begin looking at the transition from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic Revolution.
 
Grades and feedback are being entered into both Teams and Infinite Campus. If you have the capability I would suggest you download the Adams12 Infinite Campus App, create a login, and turn on notifications. That way you will get an automatic update every time one of your student's grades is entered.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/12/24

Greetings Social Studies Families!
 
For our first week students will be answering the question "What is History?"  To do this, they will analyze images, video, vocabulary, and text to understand that history is not a single story but many, and that the job of historians is to analyze multiple primary and secondary sources to create theories about what happened in the past and why.
 
On Thursday and Friday, we will use half of the day for students to take their Fall NWEA MAPS assessments in Reading and Math. Over the course of those two days, students will have each of their content classes one time.
