World History – Week of 4/29 - 5/3

Hey Folks!

This week we will be turning in our research papers by midnight Wednesday. On Monday we will start Topic 11 Revolution, Enlightenment, and the American Colonies 1580-1800.

Essential Question:

What did Rousseau mean when he stated that if individuals wanted to pursue their own self-interests at the expense of the common good, they “will be forced to be free”? Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Learning Objectives

Topic 11.1 The Scientific Revolution

Objectives: Trace how the development of new technology and scientific theories became the foundation of the Scientific Revolution. Understand how the Scientific Revolution gave Europeans a new way to view humankind’s place in the universe. Recognize how contributions of Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and Newton, led to a new concept of the universe.

Topic 11.2 The Enlightenment

Objectives: Understand how Eighteenth-century intellectuals used the ideas of the Scientific Revolution to reexamine all aspects of life. Describe why Enlightenment thinkers, or philosophes, believed all institutions should follow natural laws to produce the ideal society.

Topic 11.3 The Impact of the Enlightenment

Objectives: Describe how Europe’s individual nations were chiefly guided by the self- interest of their rulers. Explain why philosophes believed that, in order to reform society based on Enlightenment ideals, people should be governed by enlightened rulers.

Topic 11.4 The Southern Colonies Take Root

Learning objectives: Explain why England wanted colonies and how they were planned. Describe how Jamestown was settled, why the colony struggled, and how it survived. Explain the relationship between American Indians and settlers in the Southern Colonies. Discuss how Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia were settled.
