Course Description

A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual history of the United States from the 1877 to the present. United States History II examines industrialization, immigration, world wars, the Great Depression, Cold War and post Cold War eras. Themes that may be addressed in United States History II include: American culture, religion, civil and human rights, technological change, economic change, immigration and migration, urbanization and suburbanization, the expansion of the federal government, and the study of U.S. foreign policy. The course features an in depth look into eras of social change such as the labor, feminist, and civil rights movements.

Topic 9.2 Social Crises, War, and Revolution

Objects: Understand why social, economic, and religious conflicts challenged the established political order throughout Europe. Understand how population decline in Europe and the hysteria of witchcraft trials contributed to economic and social problems in seventeenth-century Europe. Describe how Europeans responded to economic and social problems.

Topic 9.3 Response to Crisis: Absolutism

Objectives: Describe how France became the greatest power of the seventeenth century. Understand the reasons why Prussia, Austria, and Russia also emerged as great European powers. Summarize the accomplishments of Peter the Great.

Topic 9.4 The World of European Culture

Objectives: Understand how art and literature reflected people’s spiritual perceptions and the human condition.

Describe how the artistic movements of Mannerism and the baroque began in Italy and reflected the spiritual perceptions of the time. Learn how mannerism depicted the tensions in society after the Renaissance.
