Mr. Cuevas, Algebra II

Posts

Week of April 29th

This Week: We will use standard deviations and z-scores to interpret and predict data in a set.

Due from last week: None

Common Core State Standard: HS.S-IC.A. Making Inferences & Justifying Conclusions: Understand and evaluate random processes underlying statistical experiments.

Week of April 22nd

This Week: We will begin our final unit of the year: Introduction to Statistics. We will review Measures of Central Tendency before jumping into standard deviation, the empirical rule, and z-scores. All of these will help us to make sense of data by pulling useful information from large data sets.

Due from Last Week: None - check IC for missing assignments.

Common Core State Standard: HS.S-IC.B. Making Inferences & Justifying Conclusions: Make inferences and justify conclusions from sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies.

Week of April 15th

This week, all classes will review material from the year before state testing! Remember, the schedule is different in HS due to testing this week:

Monday: Normal schedule
Tuesday: Normal schedule
Wednesday: SAT (Juniors only)
Thursday: PSAT 9 (Freshmen only)
Friday: PSAT 10 (Sophomores only)

Please be sure to arrive by 8:00 on the day of your test! Also, Prom is Friday from 7 - 11 at the Brighton Armory - check a previous post for details!

Prom!!!

Prom is fast approaching, and we are looking for some help in providing snacks and drinks during the event. If you are financially able, please consider making a donation so we can give the kids a memorable night! Send any donations with your student on April 19th (the same day as prom). We will then take food from Westgate to the Brighton Armory to make sure it is ready in time for the dance. You can also send your students with the food to the event itself!

And, as a reminder, here's all the prom info!

What: Westgate Prom 2024
Theme: Gothic Literature
Attire: Formal! Please dress up if you plan to attend the event.
When: Friday, April 19th from 7:00 - 11:00
Where: Brighton Armory (300 Strong St, Brighton, CO 80601)
Tickets: $50, with three ways to pay:
  • Pay at the event itself with cash
  • Insert an envelope with cash or check into the slot box inside the first set of main doors at Westgate (make checks out to Westgate Community School with a memo of "Prom." Be sure to put your student's name as well!)
Attendees: All 9th - 12th grade Westgate students are invited! If your student would like to bring a high school guest from a different school, they should check with the front desk for the guest form. Only one guest per Westgate student, please.

Week of April 8th

This Week: We will be prepping for the SAT this week. This will include factoring, complex numbers, turning word problems into functions, and whatever else the students need.

Due from Last Week: None

Common Core State Standard: HS.F-BF.A. Building Functions: Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities. (And others, though this standard covers a lot of ground on the SAT!)

Week of March 18th 2024

This Week: We will learn to rearrange, solve, and combine terms within complex numbers. This will also include a brief introduction to "i," the imaginary number!

Common Core State Standard: HS.N-CN.A. The Complex Number System: Perform arithmetic operations with complex numbers.

Due from Last Week: Quiz: Expressions with Radicals

Week of March 11th

This Week: We will finish using conjugates to solve fractions with radicals before moving into complex numbers. The problems use the imaginary number, "i," and are useful in physics problems involving the flow of electricity.

Common Core State Standard: HS.F-BF.B. Building Functions: Build new functions from existing functions.

Due from Last Week: Simplifying Expressions with Radicals (notebook problems)

Week of March 4th 2024

This Week: We will learn to simplify expressions with radicals using the rules for reducing fractions and simplifying radicals using prime factorization.

Common Core State Standard: HS.N-RN.B. The Real Number System: Use properties of rational and irrational numbers.

Due from last week: Interest Quiz Revisions

Week of February 26th

This Week: We will take a quiz over our three interest formulas (simple, compound, and continuous compound) before learning to solve rational expressions using conjugates (we may do some fraction review first if needed)

Common Core State Standard: HS.A-APR.C. Arithmetic with Polynomials & Rational Expressions: Use polynomial identities to solve problems.

Due from Last Week: Growth and Interest Sheet

Week of February 19th

This Week: We will learn about Euler's Number (pronounced "Oiler's") and the application of continuous growth through problems about continuous compound interest and the half-life formula.

Common Core State Standards: HS.F-IF.B. Interpreting Functions: Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.

Due from last week: None (except for science stoichiometry sheets we looked at last week, but those go to Mrs. Schneider based on her due dates!)

Week of February 12th

This Week: Things look a little different this week! We are taking a step back from exponential growth (which will return next Monday). Instead, we will be focusing on the intersection of math and chemistry known as stoichiometry - a system for keeping units straight during chemical reaction equations (and this process works well in many other math problems as well, so it's a win-win for math and science!)

Common Core State Standard: HS.N-Q.A. Quantities: Reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems.

Due from last week: Compound Interest worksheet

Week of January 22nd

This week: We will use logarithms to simplify and solve for exponents as decimals. We will wrap this up this week and begin applying it to interest and half-life problems next week.

Common core state standard: HS.F-IF.C. Interpreting Functions: Analyze functions using different representations

Due from last week: Intro to Logarithm Quiz

Week of January 17th

This Week: We will continue using logarithms to find exponents that aren't whole numbers. Given that this class only meets twice this week, we will review and take a mid-unit quiz.

Common Core State Standard: HS.F-IF.C. Interpreting Functions: Analyze functions using different representations.

Due From Last Week: Practice with Logarithms
