Mr. Kahn, Math - C (7-2)

Course Description

The concepts taught in 7th grade mathematics serve the dual purpose of tying together the knowledge of previous academic years and solidifying the foundation of our students mathematical careers. In 7th grade math, we will learn to operate within the realm of rational numbers and how to create expressions, equations, and inequalities to model relationships between these numbers. We will also gain exposure to practical tools like ratios, proportions, probability, and statistics. Finally, we will end the year by developing our understanding of geometry and its practical uses.

One of my core beliefs as a teacher is to demonstrate not just the principal, but its application as well. Without knowing how they will use math, it can be difficult for students to justify why they put so much effort into using it. I understand this more than most, which is why I commit to using my diverse professional background to illustrate for my students the value and applications of math in the real world. Each quarter, I will create engaging projects based on real world scenarios which show students the plethora of interesting and curiosity inspiring ways in which math drives our world.

Course Update: 7-2 - 10/16/23

Hello All! Welcome back for our first week of Quarter 2. This week, in math, our students will be introduced to algebraic equations as well as how to solve them. We will be primarily focused on solving simple equations in one step using addition and subtraction.

Course Update - Week of 8/25/23 - 7-2

Hello Everyone! In this final week of quarter one, we will be continuing to hone our skills with algebraic expressions by learning how to add and subtract them as well as how to simplify them using the distributive property. Then, to end the week, we will learn how to go backwards through the process by learning factoring techniques. As it is the last week of the quarter, please make sure that your students return any borrowed textbooks to class. I will be reminding them throughout the week as well.

Course Update - 7-2 - Week of 9/18

Hello Everyone! As we approach the end of quarter one, our seventh graders of the 7-C class will be using their knowledge of arithmetic operations to identify like terms and simplify algebraic expressions. At the end of this week our grading window will close. As such, we are asking that our students have all late/missing work turned in by this coming Wednesday (9/20).

Math C (7-2) Update - Week of 9/5/23

Hello Everyone! This week, we will open with a two-day section on converting between fractions and decimals and back to fractions again on Monday and Tuesday before diving into the multiplication of rational numbers on Thursday and Friday. In addition, this week we will also be introducing our quarter 1 project. In which, our students will try their hand at entrepreneurship and using the arithmetic operations to test the profitability of their unique product ideas!

Math C (7-2) Course Update: Week of 8/21/23

Hello All! This coming week, 7-th grade math will cover the subtraction of integers on Monday and Tuesday before expanding into the set of rational numbers on Wednesday and Thursday. These are sections 1.4 and 1.5 in our Big Ideas Math textbook. On Friday, we will be summarizing chapter 1 and taking a practice test to prepare our students for the actual chapter 1 quiz which will take place at the beginning of next week. I will also be introducing to studnets the Big Ideas Math online platform at the beginning of this week, it will provide many assets for both your student and yourself to employ throughout the year. This includes, but is not limited to, an interactive virtual text, extra math practice assignments, video and audio walk throughs of various example problems, and math games!
