Mr. Kahn, Math - A (7-1)

Course Description

The concepts taught in 7th grade mathematics serve the dual purpose of tying together the knowledge of previous academic years and solidifying the foundation of our students mathematical careers. In 7th grade math, we will learn to operate within the realm of rational numbers and how to create expressions, equations, and inequalities to model relationships between these numbers. We will also gain exposure to practical tools like ratios, proportions, probability, and statistics. Finally, we will end the year by developing our understanding of geometry and its practical uses.

One of my core beliefs as a teacher is to demonstrate not just the principal, but its application as well. Without knowing how they will use math, it can be difficult for students to justify why they put so much effort into using it. I understand this more than most, which is why I commit to using my diverse professional background to illustrate for my students the value and applications of math in the real world. Each quarter, I will create engaging projects based on real world scenarios which show students the plethora of interesting and curiosity inspiring ways in which math drives our world.

Course update: 7-1 - 10/16/23

Hi All! Welcome back from fall break! In math class this week we will be beginning our fifth unit of the year. In this unit we will be focusing on ratios and proportions. More specifically, rates, unit rates, ratios, proportional relationships, and solving proportions.

Course Update - Week of 8/25/23 - 7-1

Hello All! In this last week of our quarter one, we will be using the skills we developed in solving equations to solve, graph, and practically employ inequalites. As it is the last week of the quarter, please make sure that your students return any borrowed textbooks to class. I will be reminding them throughout the week as well.

Course Update - 7-1 - Week of 9/18/23

Hello All! As we begin to wrap up quarter one of this school year our seventh grade students of the class 7-A will be putting a close to our section on algebraic expressions, including how to simplify and factor them. Additionally, at the end of this week, our grading window will close. We are asking that our students have all late/missing work turned in by Wednesday for final grading. Thanks and have a great week!

Math A (7-1) Update - week of 9/5/23

Hello All! In this fifth week of quarter one, we are closing chapter two and opening chapter 3 of our book, putting the arithmetic operations behind us and stepping into the wide world of expressions as well as their various usages. On Tuesday, we will be taking our chapter two practice test before our actual chapter 2 test on Wednesday. Then, on Thursday we will open chapter 3 and really dive in on Friday.  In addition, this week we will also be introducing our quarter 1 project. In which, our students will try their hand at entrepreneurship and using the arithmetic operations to test the profitability of their unique product ideas!

Math A (7-1) Course Update: Week of 8/21/23

Hello All, In class last week, we kicked of the year with a review of the fundamental operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division within the set of rational numbers as well as the integers there in. This coming week, We will start by summarizing that which we learned last week before having a quiz on the subject matter on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we will jump into Chapter two, progressing through sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 throughout the remainder of the week. These sections cover the multiplication and division of integers as well as how to convert between fractions and decimals. Additionally, I will be introducing the students to the Big Ideas Math online platform. This will provide online materials which include an interactive online textbook, extra practice, and math games.
