Science and puzzle club!

Hi science families!

This week, we will be having our ELA CMAS Tuesday through Thursday mornings. Students will have regular classes in the afternoon. In science, we will be working on our end of the year project. Students have identified 1 vocabulary term for each letter of the alphabet that relates to what they have learned this year in science. Working on the project allows them to buy into their own learning and give as much as they can after a morning of teaching. The project is due mid-May so they should not be working on it at home!

In other news, I will be running a puzzle club on Wednesday's and would love for your kiddo to attend! Puzzling is a great way to have a way of creating mental stimulation, stress relief, a sense of accomplishment, patience, teamwork and collaboration! Students will be able to work individually or with a group to solve puzzles ranging from 50 to 500 pieces in a relaxing environment. I will also be providing a snack!

Please talk to your kiddo and sign them up using the link below. The sign-up closes Sunday at 11:59 pm.

Reach out with any questions and have a great weekend!

Gradebook Update

Hi science families,

Thank you for your patience as I enter grades for this quarter. For my classroom policy, I allow students 2 weeks to turn in missing work or fix their work after I enter it in the gradebook. If they are missing an assignment, please encourage them to turn it in or get a blank copy to complete the work!

Please reach out with any questions and have a great weekend!

8th Science 1/22 - 1/26

Hello Science families!

We are well into our way through our Energy Unit! We began with mechanical (potential and kinetic) energy and are now focusing on electrical energy. This week, we will:

  • Finish electric energy (static vs current electric energy)
  • Begin learning about magnetism
  • Complete a magnetism lab

As always, please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

8th science 1/8 - 1/12

Welcome back!

I hope you had restful break! We will be hitting the ground running by starting a new unit! We will spend most of the quarter learning about Energy. This week we will:

  • Begin with an introduction to the different types of energy
  • Energy transformations
  • Begin learning about mechanical energy

Please reach out with any questions or concerns and have a great week!

8th grade science 11/27 - 12/1

Hello science families!

I hope you had a great week! In science, we are starting a new unit that we should be able to finish before winter break. We are starting our work, power and machines unit where we will learn how to compare the power outputs of two objects, calculate power and work, identify 6 simple machines and calculate mechanical advantage. This week, we will:

  • Define key vocabulary words needed for this unit
  • Determine how to calculate work
  • Determine how to calculate power

As a reminder, students are able to complete test corrections for our Force and Motion Unit and turn them in to me by this Friday (12/1). Please reach out with any questions or concerns and have a great week!

Test Corrections

Hello science families!

Today (11/16) students received their graded assessments back and are given the opportunity for test corrections to show mastery. Unless a student has already received a 4, students can complete a test correction sheet to show mastery of their material. This is not mandatory but it is highly encouraged!

To receive credit back, on the form they must:
  • put the question number
  • record their original answer
  • record the correct answer
  • give a 2-3 sentence explaining why it is the correct answer
All of our PowerPoints are in a folder on Teams. I encourage them to use them to help their explainations! Please let me know if your student cannot log into Teams at home and I can help troubleshoot.

I will be out of the building tomorrow as my husband is having a preventive procedure but I will be available by email to answer questions!

They have until 12/1 to complete the test corrections. Please reach out with any questions or concerns and have a great break!

8th grade science 11/6-11/10

Hello science families!

This past week, we learned about Newton's Laws of Motion. During this 4-day week, we will:
  • Complete a task card assignment
  • Take a Newton's Laws of Motion quiz
  • Complete a study guide and review game
  • Take our Force and Motion unit exam
Next week, we will complete force and motion labs/ projects to wrap up the unit before moving into energy. Please reach out with any questions or concerns and have a great week!

8th grade science 10/30 - 11/3

Hello 8th grade science families!

We were able to get caught up and then some! We ended Friday on an inertia inquiry lab that we will finish on Monday. The rest of the week we will:
  • Monday - finish the inertia inquiry lab
  • Tuesday morning class - pumpkin catapult; Tuesday afternoon - none (Halloween party)
  • Wednesday - Newton's Laws of motion and the science behind the NFL (Wednesday afternoon's class will be split into other classes as my advocacy will be on a walking field trip to get our advocacy's class pet)
  • Thursday and Friday - Newton's Laws of Motion notes and practice
As always, please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

8th grade science 10/23-10/27

Hello 8th grade science families!

I hope you had a great week. This past Tuesday I unexpectedly lost my cat, and I was out on Tuesday and Wednesday. Because of this, we are about a day behind than what I planned but I know we can get caught up! I appreciate your patience as I get caught up on grades as well. This week, we will:

  • Relate mass to free-fall and acceleration
  • Complete the lab “Which Falls Faster... a Muffin or a Moose?”
  • Compare and contrast weight versus mass
  • Determine how air resistance affects free fall

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. Have a great week!

8th grade science 10/16 - 10/20

Hello 8th grade science families!

Hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready for second quarter! We ended the quarter by completing a force and motion choice board activity that will be our first grade in the gradebook. This week, we will:

  • Understand why and how the leaves change colors
  • Review forces and types of friction
  • Complete a lab comparing gravity on earth to other planets and moons
  • Understand how mass relates to weight and free-fall

Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

8th Grade Science 9/11 - 9/15

Hello 8th grade science families!

This week in science we will:
  • Compare distance, velocity and time graphs
  • Calculate acceleration
  • Compare and contrast speed, velocity and acceleration
Please reach out with any questions!

8th grade Science 9/5 - 9/8

Hello 8th grade science families!

This past week, we began our Force and Motion unit! We began the week by calculating speed and ended the week calculating our own speeds in a lab. This week, we will:
  • Finish our speed lab and compare each other's speeds to determine who was the fastest
  • Learn how to calculate velocity
  • Compare speed and velocity graphs
  • Take a quiz on speed and velocity
Please reach out with any questions or concerns!

8th grade science 8/21 - 8/25

Hi 8th grade science families!

We've had a great first 2 weeks of school! This week, we will continue to finish out introductory unit by learning about:
  • Claim, Evidence and Reasoning (CER)
  • Scientific method and the difference between S.M. and CER
  • Graphing and data analysis
I have imputed your students pre-assessment score into the gradebook but I want to reiterate that this will not affect their overall score for this quarter or school year. By having it in the grade book, we can refer back to it throughout the year and compare scores at the end of the year.

Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

8th Grade Science 8/14-8/18

Hello 8th grade science families!

This year in science, 8th grade will be learning about physical science! This week, we will:
  • Start with a pre-assessment of everything that they will learn this year on Monday. The pre-assessment will go into the gradebook, but will not actually be a part of their grade for this quarter. This is just to show their growth!
  • Review metric conversions and measurements
We will have MAP testing on Thursday so it cuts our week a little short. I am looking forward to a great year! Please reach out with any questions or concerns!
