Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (4/22 - 4/26)

Hi Families,

Our Junior Historians are doing an amazing job as we discuss timeline events and how one action can impact so many others. We looked into chronological order, sequence, past, present, future, change, first, next and last. Our Junior Historians even began their own experiment as they investigate the movement of time.

This week we are building off the curiosity that developed from our previous class discussions and will delve a little deeper into primary and secondary sources as we create our own Junior Historian books. Students will write their own book on our national symbols and note sources during our research.

Our fun investigations continue 🙂

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (4/15 - 4/19)

Hi Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed hearing about our field trip to Four Mile Historic Park. Our kids did a great job stepping back in time and learning about tracking footprints, making cornbread and butter, creating their corn husk dolls, as well as visiting a one-room schoolhouse. It was a day full of hands-on lessons.

This week, we will use our field trip to jump into our history curriculum.  During this unit, we will discuss historical periods, in addition to the way perspectives and traditions have shaped the United States.  We will also learn about National Symbols and their significance to our country.

We are looking forward to our time this week!

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (1/22 - 1/26)

Hi Families,

I hope everyone has been enjoying the songs of coins, and the jobs in our community. We have had a lot of fun recognizing the different parts of the team around us.

This is our last week with Economics. This week, we will explore different businesses, bartering, supply and demand, and how to use a budget to save money.  On Friday, we will wrap everything up with our unit test.

We are off to a wee of Social Studies fun :)

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (1/16 - 1/19)

Hi Families,

Last week in Social Studies we had fun playing with vocabulary as well as our Consumer & Producer and Needs & Wants games. Our Junior Investigators did a great job recognizing these economic principles and providing examples from their own lives.

Next week, we will review different careers and the impact of those jobs on our community. This is a great time to talk with your Junior Investigator about your hard work in our community and the amazing impact you make every day! We will also find ourselves in an extension from our Math classes and begin to play with money.

Key Learning Unit Objectives:

  • Identify Needs and Wants: Distinguish between things we need for survival and things we want for enjoyment. Recognize that individuals make choices based on their needs and wants.
  • Understand Scarcity: Explore the idea that resources are limited, leading to the concept of scarcity.  Discuss the importance of making choices when faced with scarcity.
  • Recognize Resources: Identify different types of resources, including natural, human, and capital resources. Understand how these resources contribute to meeting the needs and wants of our community.
  • Explore Decision Making: Engage in decision-making activities to understand the process of making choices. Discuss the concept of trade-offs and the consequences of decisions.
  • Appreciate Goods and Services: Differentiate between goods (items we can touch or hold) and services (actions provided by others). Explore the interdependence between producers and consumers in a community.
We will have a creative week of dreaming about when we grow up :)

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (1/8 - 1/12)

Hi Families,

For the first three weeks of Quarter 3, we will address our next Social Studies unit. The primary focus of this unit is to introduce students to fundamental economic principles such as scarcity, choices, and resources. Students will explore the concept of making decisions based on needs and wants, recognizing the availability of resources, and understanding the consequences of choices.

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (10/30 - 11/3)

Hi Families,

Hopefully you are starting to hear about our seven continents, navigation, and the essential ways to read a map. If you have been missing out in this fun, you could always ask them about top bunk, bottom bunk, who's up?, what is the alarm clock, where is the cute kangaroo, who's the cold aunt, and what's the other guy's name? I am sure these questions will lead to a wonderful song that is bound to linger in your mind and cause you to smile all day long 🙂

Next week we will address map keys and how to locate specific spots throughout our seven continents, our continent, our country, our state, our city, and our school.

We are looking forward to more map fun.

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (10/23 - 10/27)

Hi Families,

We had fun investigations last week as we began to look into maps and the idea of navigation. Students strongly connected with using a compass rose, a legend, and orientating themselves while using a map. This led our class to look at the broader globe and compare where we are located to that of other continents.

Next week we will build off of this comparison and look at our own addresses, neighborhoods, towns, states, countries, continents, all the way to our planet in the Milky Way. Ah, the wonders of investigations.

Have fun hearing about maps.

Foley-Diaz Social Studies Update (10/16 - 10/20)

Hi Families,

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the solar eclipse. It seemed like a great way to move our classes from addressing science to entering our 2nd Quarter social studies.

This week, we will be starting our Maps and Globes unit.  During the first part of this unit, we will focus on what a community is, the importance of taking care of that community, and developing an understanding of how we depend on our environment to survive. This will lead into the second part of our unit, which will focus on maps and globes, understanding cardinal directions on a compass rose, the purpose of a map key and how to create a map of familiar places.

We are starting some social studies fun :)
