Literacy Week of April 22nd

This week in Literacy we will be continuing Unit 9 by exploring why rules are important in our school, homes, and in the world. We will be introducing our newest sound…long Ee! The two sight words of the week are: “write” and “get.” This week, we will have another spelling test, this one focusing on the sound of short Ii. Just as last week, students will be tested on 4 CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and 1 CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) word.

Literacy Week of April 15th

This week in literacy we will be diving into a new unit! In unit 9, we will explore what are rules and why we have them. This will take place in our school (school rules) and outside in the world (laws)! We will also introduce our newest sound… Long u! The two sight words of the week are: more and two! As you know, last week we had a spelling test focusing on the sound ‘short a’. This week, we will have another spelling test, but will focus on the sound ‘short o’. Just as last week, students will be tested on 4 CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and 1 CVCC (consonant, vowel consonant, consonant) word. 

Literacy Week of April 8th

Welcome back families! This week in literacy we will be finishing unit 8, which explores the habitats and biomes of animals around the world. We will also introduce our newest sound… Long o! We will be switching up our sight words a bit for the next few weeks. We will now only focus on 2 sight words per week and continue to do so through the rest of the year with review words. The sight words for this week are: would and time. In addition to this, we will begin spelling tests based on spelling patterns. This week, we will be working on short a sounds and on Friday, students will be tested on 4 CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and 1 CVCC (consonant, vowel, consonant, consonant) word. 

Literacy Week of March 18th

Hi families! We will continue to dive into unit 8 with students. Remember that unit 8 is all about animal homes or habitats. This week, we will discuss animals who live in the desert, forest, and ocean through stories and poems. We will be reviewing our long A and introducing long I. Our sight words for this week are: these, make, and into. We will be sending home our April sight words to families this Friday for Spring Break! 

Literacy Week of March 11th

This week, we will be beginning unit 8! Unit 8 is all about animal habitats within different biomes. We will be exploring animals that live in the rainforest! In addition to this, we will explore animals that begin with letters from the alphabet! We will also introduce the sound long A, or our superhero letter A. Our sight words for the week are: them, so, and these. Some of these sight words are from our April sight words. We will be sending them home to students next Friday for Spring Break. 

Literacy Week of February 26th

We will be finishing Unit 7 in our Literacy Curriculum. We will continue to explore what plants (living things) need to survive and grow, and how plants are able to get what they need from their environment.


For phonemic awareness, students will continue to work on blending CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. We will introduce the letters “Yy” and “Vv,” as well as review the letters “Ww” “Kk” “Qq” and “Ee.”


For sight words, we are finishing up February with the word “each.” We will also be starting March sight words and work on the words “out” “other” and “will” March sight words will be sent home in this week’s Friday folders.

Literacy Week of February 20th

We will be continuing with Unit 7 in our Literacy Curriculum and continue to explore what plants (living things) need to survive and grow. We will also explore how living things, such as plants, are able to get what they need from their environment.


For phonemic awareness, students will continue to work on blending CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and will work with the letters “Ee” and “Qq.”


This week for sight words, we will work on the words: “or” “if” “use” “which”

Literacy Week of February 12th

Due to the short week we will be having, students will explore books that are not in our curriculum. We hope these books will bring a lot of joy and a love for reading. 


For phonemic awareness, students will continue to work on blending CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and will review the letters ‘Zz,’ ‘Ss,’ ‘Jj,’ ‘Ff,’ and short ‘Uu’. In addition to this, they will work on the following sight words: from, one, and are. 

Literacy Week of February 5th

We will be introducing unit 7! Time is going by so quickly! In unit 7, students explore what living things, mostly plants, need to survive and grow. In addition to this, they will learn how these living things get what they need to survive from their environment. 


For phonemic awareness, students will continue to work on blending CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words and will work with the letters ‘Kk’ and ‘Ww’. We will dive deeper into what are digraphs (a combination of 2 letters that make 1 sound - example: ‘sh’). 


Lastly, students received their February sight word list last Friday. This week, we will work on: your, words, their, and how. 

Literacy Week of January 22nd

We will be continuing Unit 6 and continue to explore cultures, traditions, and customs of people all around the world! To support our understanding, we will be making a craft of the traditions presented in our texts and talking in depth about what traditions are. We will also learn the sounds of ‘Uu’ and ‘Xx’. Please continue practicing sight words at home. We will be introducing the following sight words from January: “when”, “be”, “this”, and “an”.

Literacy Week of January 17th

We will be starting a brand new unit this week! In unit 6, we explore what is culture and examine the traditions and customs of people all around the world! To support our understanding, we will be making a craft of the traditions presented in our texts. We will also learn the sounds of ‘Jj’ and ‘Ff’. Please continue practicing sight words at home. We will be introducing the following sight words from January: little, by, and then.  


January sight words will be sent this week in their Friday Folders.

This Friday, we will be having a Chex-Mix reading party. Each student will bring a dry food snack (ex: chips, cheerios, cheetos) and we will mix them all up! Each student will get a little cup of our class Chex-Mix and have time to read! Feel free to have them bring in their favorite books. I'd love to read them out loud to the class. 

Please have your student bring in a dry food snack on Friday, January 19th. If you would not like your student to participate, please provide them with a snack from home.

Literacy Week of January 8th

We are going to continue our explorations of homes! This week, we will read a book about the steps of constructing a house. To support our understanding, we will construct our own home! In addition to this, we will read a fictional story about valuing the homes we have and why they are important. To support our understanding, we will be making a gratitude jar as a class. Lastly, we will be learning the sounds of ‘Gg’ and reviewing the sounds ‘Bb’, ‘Cc,’ ‘Rr,’ and ‘Oo.’ Please continue practicing sight words at home. We will be introducing the following sight words from December: down, they, that, and with.

We are still learning about homes. We will read a variety of selections that teach us about different types of home and why homes are important. We will begin to understand why we need homes and how homes are built around the world. We will introduce the letter names and sounds for the letters Rr and O. Please continue to work on sight words with your kindergartener and practice these every night if you can.

We will introduce the letter names and sounds for the letters Bb and Cc. We will be sending home the December sight words on Friday. Please continue to work on sight words with your kindergartener and practice these every night if you can.

Literacy Week of November 13th

This will be our last week in Unit 4, Pushes and Pulls. This week, we will identify how we use pushes and pulls to help us in our daily lives. To do this, we will read stories that are realistic fiction. Students will also be introduced to the letter Ii and the short sound it makes. In addition to this, we will also review the letters Hh, Ll, Tt, and Nn. and Ll. Please continue to work on November sight words with your kindergartener and practice these every night if you can. The sight words we will be going over in class are: up, him, and but.
