8th Science 5/15 - 5/19

Hello science families!

We are entering our last full week of classes! This week, we will be:
  • Finishing our A-Z science project where students will select one word that they learned about this school year for each letter of the alphabet. This is on Teams and is due on Wednesday (the 17th). We will spend some time in class this week working on it but students may need to spend time in academic success lab finishing it.
  • We will spend the rest of the week learning about nomenclature - naming ionic and covalent compounds.

All missing work is due on Wednesday so please remind your student to check in with me to get any missing work completed! If it is not turned in, it will become a 1 in the gradebook. Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

8th grade Science 5/8 - 5/12

Hello 8th grade science families,

After a couple of busy weeks, we will finally have a normal week! This week in science, we will:
  • compare ionic and covalent bonds
  • Draw Lewis-dot diagrams
  • How to name and write ionic and covalent compounds (nomenclature)

Please reach out with any questions and have a great week

8th Grade Science 4/24 - 4/28

Hello 8th grade families!!

This week, our students will be venturing to Outdoor Ed! Students who will not be attending will be completing lessons put together by Ms. Charlie that aligns with what the other students are learning!

When everyone returns together again on Thursday and Friday, we will be learning about isotopes to finish out this unit. Last week, students presented their Periodic Element PowerPoints in class instead of starting isotopes.

Please reach out with any questions and have a great week!

This week the 8th graders will have their science CMAS on Tuesday and Wednesday. We also have our Global Cleanup on Friday as it is Earth Week! In class, we will:
  • Review the periodic table and atomic structures as CMAS prep
  • Present their atomic element that they made a report on
  • If we finish with presentation early, we will begin learning about isotopes

8th Grade Science Update - 3/5/23

Hello 8th grade families!

We've got a lot to pack into this upcoming week.  We dove right into our new unit, Atomic Structure, by learning about the periodic table.  Who invented it?  Why is it organized the way it is?  And how to read it.  We've worked on a couple assignments to help the students with all of these questions.

This week, we'll have a quiz on the periodic table and then finish off with the history of the atom.  We'll discover what scientists believed about atoms throughout history.  And, we'll learn about which scientists made significant discoveries to our current understanding of the atom.

Please let me know if you have any questions.  I'll see you at conferences later this week and have a great spring break!

Best,

Shandi Woodward

8th Grade Science Update - 2/27

Hello 8th grade Science families!

We finished up our Matter unit last week and we've moved onto our new unit of learning about the Atomic Structure.  We started learning vocabulary that will help us this week in learning how the period table is structured and why.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week!

Best,
Ms. Woodward

8th Grade Science Update 1/23

Hello 8th grade Science families!

Thank you for your patience as I step into Ms. Haworth's shoes.

For the month of January, we started a new unit on Matter.  We've been learning how to classify matter, the different properties and how to determine the property, as well as discussing density.

This week we will be discussing solutions and solubility and what makes the solubility increase.  We will also be touching on how to calculate density.

I look forward to this week and welcome any questions you may have!

Best,
Ms. Woodward

Mrs. Haworth out on maternity leave

Hello Westgate families!

I wanted to send a reminder that I will be out on maternity leave until mid-April. I welcomed my beautiful baby girl on December 22nd and could not be more in love! In the meantime, Shandi Woodward is my long term and will be updating Edlio. Please feel free to email her at [email protected] .

Have a great quarter 3!

8th grade science 12/5-12/9

Hello 8th grade science families!

We are quickly approaching the end of the quarter! This week, we will be:
  • Reviewing machines (simple and complex)
  • Learning about mechanical advantage
  • Reviewing power, work and machines
  • Completing a mini assessment (Friday 12/9)
Please remind your student that all missing work is due end of the day Wednesday (12/7) for all classes! Work can be completed during Academic Lab and at home. All work for science can be made up at anytime, so please encourage them to reach out and ask for the missing assignments!

Have a great week and reach out with any questions!

Science 11/28 - 12/2

Hello 8th grade science families!

I hope you had a restful break! As we are finishing up the second quarter, we will be completing a mini unit on work, power and machines. This week, we will:
  • Compare and contrast the different terms
  • Focus on Work and Power, including practice problems
I was not able to update the gradebooks over break so I will be completing that over the course of the week. Students also are given the chance to make up test corrections to increase their score to show their competency. I will take those corrections until the end of this week. They can make them up during academic lab or take them home and work on them. The tests were handed back to them on the Friday before break but I am willing to give them a blank test if they would like to start over as well! Students can make up to 3 on the corrections.

Please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have!
