Social Studies Update Week of 1/23/2023

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
This week students will put the finishing touches on their "Create your own Government" project on Monday. On Tuesday, students will begin presenting their government projects. 
 
I have been meeting with each student/group and monitoring their progress. Their first two grades for Articles 1-3 and 4-6 are in Infinite Campus grade book.

Tuesday 1/24 Begin presentations
 
After presentations are complete we will begin our next unit on conflict and cooperation.

Social Studies Weekly Update - 1/16/2023

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
This week students will continue working on their "Create your own Government" project.
 
I have been meeting with each student/group and monitoring their progress and I wanted to let you know the due dates associated with this project.
 
Friday 1/13: Articles 1-3 completed (I will give feedback on Tuesday)
Thursday 1/19 Articles 4-6 are due
Monday 1/23 Presentations due
Tuesday 1/24 Begin presentations
 
There we have two fewer classes this week due to MLK Day and MAPS testing. So this schedule could change slightly.

Social Studies Update Week of 1/9/2023

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Before break, students finished up the first section of their Types of Governments Unit. Students worked in groups to create and present a poster on one type of government we have studied and they reviewed for and took a quiz. This week students will begin a "Create your own Government" project where they will get to use what they have learned to create their own government.
 

There are three parts to this project but FIRST students will choose a type of government for your community and write a constitution. They will then create a visual presentation on their community’s government and culture. Finally, students will present their government to the class.

 

Topic Covered 

Article I: What type of government your community has?

Article II: What is the role of religion in your community?

Article III. What is the role of money or exchange of goods in your community?

Article IV. What is the social hierarchy and traditions of your community?

Article V. What is the role of education in your community?

Article VI. What is the importance of military and law enforcement in your community?

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!

Social Studies Update Week of 12/5/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week, students were introduced to the different types of governments. For this unit we are looking at Direct and Representative Democracies, Absolute and Parliamentary Monarchies, Oligarchy, Autocracy, Dictatorship and Theocracy. Students read and researched to complete a scavenger hunt, a brochure and a wanted poster to learn about these governments in different ways. 
This week we will continue our study with a Who Rules Nearpod and group poster activity. There will be a quiz on types of governments this Friday.

Social Studies Update Week of 8/14/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week, students finalized and describe the artifact they will be creating for their World Religions museum exhibit and made a list of the materials they need to complete this artifact. This week, student can bring these materials to school to create their artifacts and prepare for their World Religions museum exhibit. I will also be providing any materials students can't bring from home to help with the creation of these artifacts. 
 
The students and I would like to invite you to come see this exhibit on Friday. We know this wont work for everyone's schedule, but if you can and want to swing by the school, we would love to have you view our World Religions Museum. 
 
When: Friday, November 18th
  • Class C: 1:15 - 2:15
  • Class D: 2:15 - 3:15

Social Studies Update Week of 11/

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week, students got into groups based on the religion they chose and began brainstorming what artifacts each student would add to their museum exhibit. They also learned about what it means to curate a collection in a museum.
This week, students will finalize and describe the artifact they will be creating for their World Religions museum exhibit and make a list of the materials they need to complete this artifact. Student can bring these materials to school. The rest of the week, students will create their artifacts to prepare for their World Religions museum exhibit.

Social Studies Update Week of 10/31/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week, students finished up taking notes and completing a quiz on the 5 Major World Religions. This week students will be working on a World Religion Museum Project. For this project students choose a religion they want to know more about. After this, they research and brainstorm 5 different artifacts that they might find in a museum from the religion they have chosen. After brainstorming they will form groups based on the religion they have chosen. They will then learn about what it means to curate a collection in a museum. Going back to their groups, they will each choose one artifact from their list of 5 and as a group they will create a section for the museum using the artifacts they will create. 
 
There will be not class on Monday due to the Halloween party in the afternoon.

Social Studies Update Week of 10/24/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Welcome back!
We will continue learning about World Religions this week. Students will complete a vocabulary activity and then they will take detailed notes on the 5 World Religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Finally students will complete a choice project where they will complete 2 activities of their choosing on the religion they want to know more about.

Social Studies Update Week of 10/17/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Welcome back! This quarter we will begin by learning about 5 of the major world religions: 
Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. First students will take a pre-assessment. Second, students will be introduced to these 5 religions through various activities. They will then be placed into groups and use the information to create a lesson to teach the rest of the class about the religion they were given.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/26/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week students started their final project of the quarter. This will be an ancient civilization magazine research project. Student choose one of the following civilizations to research.
  1. Ancient China 
  2. Ancient India 
  3. Ancient Egypt 
  4. Ancient Greece 
  5. Ancient Rome 
  6. Mesopotamia 

Each civilization has a choice board with 9 different activities. Each activity has a point value and these activities touch on the different parts if these civilizations. Students must complete enough activities to reach 16 points.  

Students will then use the information the gather to create a magazine about the civilization you have chosen. This magazine can be either digital or paper.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/19/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week students finished analyzing primary and secondary sources from Egypt and learned about the history of papyrus and its role in Ancient Egypt. Students also simulated making papyrus using a water/glue mixture and strips of brown paper bags.
 
This week students will finish their papyrus by adding Egyptian art. We will then start our final project of the quarter. This will be an ancient civilization magazine research project. Student will choose one of the following civilizations to research.
  1. Ancient China 
  2. Ancient India 
  3. Ancient Egypt 
  4. Ancient Greece 
  5. Ancient Rome 
  6. Mesopotamia

Social Studies Update Week of 9/12/2022

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week students finished analyzing primary and secondary sources from ancient and modern Mesopotamia and though a Nearpod lesson, got  an overview of Ancient African Civilizations which include the Egyptian, Kush and Axum Civilizations. 
This week students will take a deeper dive into ancient Egypt by doing there things.
  1. Students will complete a Nearpod on Ancient Egypt where they will learn more details about the Egyptian Civilization.
  2. Students will get to simulate making papyrus paper and then paint or draw hieroglyphics on this paper.
  3. Students will analyze primary and secondary sources about the Egyptian Civilization.

Social Studies Update Week of 9/6/22

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week students began analyzing primary and secondary sources from ancient and modern Mesopotamia. We will continue learning how to analyze these documents as historians to see what we can learn about Mesopotamia. I will then present students with an overview of Ancient African Civilizations which include the  Egypt, Kush and Axum Civilizations.

Social Studies Update Week of 8/22/22

Greetings from 7 grade Social Studies!
 
Last week students studied the differences between Primary and Secondary sources and took a quiz on that. We also began our look into the ancient Mesopotamian Civilization. 
 
This week students will read about Ancient Mesopotamia and complete some reading comprehension questions. Next students will learn more about Cuneiform; the first writing system developed in Mesopotamia. They will practice on paper and then get to create mini-clay tablets they write on using cuneiform. We will then analyze various primary documents relating to ancient Mesopotamia.
