Last Day/Week for Computers (May 5)

After continuing computer problems, including inappropriate internet searches, playing games, harassing emails, taking/sending pictures, several missing computers (possible bullying), stolen batteries, failure to properly store and/or charge on a large scale in our pod, we are going to end the year without computer use.  Sadly, the issues are too widespread to continue taking computers from individual students.  Creating paper alternatives or managing behavior for that number of students without computers in class makes more work for us as teachers.  Having them all working on paper makes things more manageable.

After Friday, May 5, (about a week earlier than usual) only students with documented IEP/504 accommodations will be allowed access to computers.  These students have been/will be informed and will be closely monitored by teachers.

If they are currently working on research or writing assignments, teachers have been encouraging students to finish as much as they can before the end of the day Friday.  After that, they can work on computers at home or work on paper.  All our lesson plans for the remainder of the year will be adapted to paper, hands on, or verbal options.

A reminder that all grades for the quarter will be posted on May 19, and any makeup work is due May 15.  Students wanted to continue checking grades in IC at home may request their username and passwords from teachers if they need them.

For specific assignment questions, please reach out to the applicable teacher.

For questions or concerns regarding this decision, please reach out to [email protected]

Ms. M's Advocacy Week of April 24

Friday will be Pajama Friday! (If the weather permits! I suggest layering!) Teaching has been a pleasure! Thank you to all the parents! Much love, Miss.M.

Spring Carnival

Our Spring Carnival and silent auction is quickly approaching! To help make our silent auction a success, each advocacy will be collecting items to be assembled into a basket that will be sold at the silent auction to be held at the Spring Carnival on May 25th from 2:00-6:00pm. This year we will need 2 parent volunteers per pod to assemble the baskets once the items are collected. The SignUp Genius below includes items for the baskets in the 5th and 6th Grade pod. We are not collecting cash donations for baskets this year and instead are focusing on items and gift cards related to the basket theme. Please send donated items in with your child no later than May 19th.  Click here for the 5th and 6th Grade basket donation sign up. Thank you for your contributions! Watch for more information on the carnival coming soon!

We are grateful for your support in modeling kindness and compassion all the time but for Kindness Week we’re asking that you take it a step further by sharing your acts of kindness with us and the world via social media and use of hashtags.

Each day has a theme with suggested actions. You can use the suggestions or do you own thing.  It’s the doing it part that counts.

Example:  Take a moment to send a heart-felt message.

2/16 Thursday – Be Kind to Yourself

·Prioritize yourself today

Example:  encourage yourself with words of affirmation, do something kind for yourself, engage in an activity that you love, give yourself a gift (like permission to not be perfect!)

KINDNESS DAY
One week….countdown to Kindness Week and Kindness Day (aka Valentine’s Day) or Tuesday, Feb. 14.  Reminder, our students do not exchange Valentine’s Day cards/candy/etc. so please do not send your student to school with valentines or treats.  Instead, our students are going out into the community to distribute hand-made Kindness cards to our neighbors.  All of the companies that participated in previous years are excited to restart this tradition and the new companies are looking forward to hosting our students.
Our class will be going to deliver cards to Global Village Academy.
Please complete this digital permission form:

January 30- February 3

Upcoming Dates:
  • Feb. 1- Spirit Night @ Skate City! 5-7 pm
  • Feb. 14- Kindness Day- more details to come
Valentine’s Day is about two weeks away but you do not need to buy cards or gifts for your student to bring to school.  The tradition at Westgate is for our students to go into the community on Valentine’s Day and distribute cards to our neighbors on something we call Kindness Day which is part of Kindness Week.  Students make the cards at school.  We’re lining up delivery locations now and as we get closer to the date, we’ll send details and a permission slip.  Our high school students are chaperoning with the younger grades so we do not need parent volunteers at this time.

Bookfair

The bookfair will be back at Westgate from January 23-27th. Our class will be previewing the show on Tuesday, Jan. 24 and will be shopping at the fair as a class on Friday, Jan. 27. October 24-28

Hello!

Picture Retakes

On October 26, 2022 there will be picture retakes.

Halloween Carnival

Every year, 5/6 grade students plan a Halloween Carnival for the K-4 students as a community service project.  They have selected groups and begun planning their activities.  They may be asking for help getting various materials for their projects.  We are only providing basic school supplies and prizes for the younger students.  If you are getting unreasonable requests, I encourage you to talk with your child about a more budget-friendly option -  recycled materials are a great option for many of these games!

Halloween Party

After running the carnival for the lower grades, students will get to relax and celebrate in our pod's Halloween Party.  Our plan is to watch some festive movies and enjoy caramel apples.
Please complete the form below to give your child permission to watch one or more of our movies:  https://forms.office.com/r/LWyLVq6ypC

If you are able to contribute snacks or drinks for the party, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4da4ad2ea3f85-56grade

Halloween Costumes

Students are encouraged to bring costumes to school on Halloween and will be allowed to change into them after lunch.  Full face paint or masks, as well as real or model weapons, are not allowed.  Keep an eye out for the full costume policy coming from admin for additional details.

Advocacy Theme - Bullying Prevention

October is Bullying Prevention Month.  Since we are spending our time on planning the carnival this month, we will be teaching lessons around this theme during the first weeks of November.
