Weekly Update: April 24-28

We are continuing hurricane presentations.
 
Student groups are teaching the class about specific aspects of hurricanes based on their research.  
Listening students will have learning activities to participate in and complete.

Weekly Update: April 17-21

This week, students will be teaching their hurricane lessons to the class.  
We are building our schedule together today, and I will post here so everyone knows what day they need to be prepared to teach.  
 
Students will NOT be able to continue working on planning lessons in class during other students' lessons.  If they are still incomplete, they need to be finishing at home.

Weekly Update: April 10-14

Unit: Atmosphere & Weather
Topic: Hurricanes
 
Students are working in small groups or independently to research essential questions about hurricanes and plan mini lessons for the class.  
Requirements/details are posted in Teams.  Lesson plans and materials are due at the end of class Friday. 
Students will be presenting their lessons during classes next week.

Weekly Update: Mar. 27-31

Topic: Hurricanes 

Students will be creating a list of essential questions to help them understand how, why, and where hurricanes form, how they move, and how they impact humans, animals, and our planet. 

They will later conduct research based on those questions, and act as experts/teachers to present their findings to the class. 

As a class, we will do a small lab modelling the Coriolis effect before beginning research. 

Week of Mar. 6-10

We are wrapping up our unit on atmosphere, climate, and weather.  Students have created a fantasy world map, and they're adding various details based on our learning during this unit: climate zones, constellations (from our learning on the field trip), weather symbols for 2 or 3 specific days, etc.

Weekly Update: Feb. 6-12

YEARBOOKS
Westgate yearbooks are now on sale! The cost is $31.00 per book, with the option of adding personalization for an additional $6.95. Yearbook sales are online only, and they will be shipped to the school to be distributed on the last day of school. Graduating seniors will receive theirs prior to graduation. The last day to purchase a yearbook is April 20. 
 
 
KINDNESS DAY
One week….countdown to Kindness Week and Kindness Day (aka Valentine’s Day) or Tuesday, Feb. 14.  Reminder, our students do not exchange Valentine’s Day cards/candy/etc. so please do not send your student to school with valentines or treats.  Instead, our students are going out into the community to distribute hand-made Kindness cards to our neighbors.  All of the companies that participated in previous years are excited to restart this tradition and the new companies are looking forward to hosting our students.
Our class will be going to deliver cards to Brown Note Productions.

This week in class:
Students will be conducting research (continuing from last week) about a selected climate zone.  They will select 5 destinations in that zone and create a travel brochure.  Assignment details are available in Microsoft Teams.

Week of Nov. 14

This will be taking their disaster (earthquake, tsunami, or volcano) research and turning it into a historical fiction story.
Stories are due Friday, but students may ask for an extension to complete them during the week off for Thanksgiving.
 
This will be the end of this major unit.  We will be moving on to changes on Earth's surface after Thanksgiving.

Update - Week of Sept. 12

In the coming weeks, students will study the effects of plate movement, beginning this week with volcanoes.
They will watch a demo of volcanic island formation, learn about the Ring of Fire, and complete a mini research project about different types of volcanoes.

Week of Aug. 22-26

This week we will wrap up our mini unit on using the scientific method with an experiment and unit test (Tuesday).
 
We will begin our study of Earth Science by reviewing the layers of the Earth and their composition.
