Kindness Day:

Tuesday, February 14th is the big day!  If you haven’t turned in a permission slip for your student, please do so now.  The weather is forecasted to be in the mid to high 40s when are students are out so we ask that you help students dress appropriately for a walk outside.  We can’t wait to visit our neighbors and share our kindness!  Parents and guardians can take part in Kindness Week too.  See details for each day below.

We are grateful for your support in modeling kindness and compassion all the time but for Kindness Week we’re asking that you take it a step further by sharing your acts of kindness with us and the world via social media and the use of hashtags.

Each day has a theme with suggested actions. You can use the suggestions or do your own thing.  It’s the doing it part that counts.

2/13 Monday - Words of Affirmation, Encouragement, and Love

  • Write a letter, send a text, or make a phone call to someone you appreciate

Example:  Take a moment to send a heart-felt message.

2/14 Tuesday - Acts of Service

  • Do something kind (like a conscious act of kindness) for someone today

Example: Share a compliment, smile at somebody, help clean up, etc.!

  • Students will go into the community to share kindness cards on this day

2/15 Wednesday – A Day of Giving

  • Share a gift with someone (you don’t need money to give a gift!)

Example: Cook a meal, bake a treat, make a craft or just give something from your heart to someone else!

2/16 Thursday – Be Kind to Yourself

  • Prioritize yourself today

Example:  encourage yourself with words of affirmation, do something kind for yourself, engage in an activity that you love, give yourself a gift (like permission to not be perfect!)

2/17 Friday (NO SCHOOL) – Feel Good Friday - Quality Time

  • Enjoy intentional quality time with someone you love and appreciate
  • Example: Play a board game, make dinner together, eat around a table, walk and talk, etc.!

Our class will be going to Future Forward which is right across the street from Westgate. FutureForward is the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program which provides students with unique opportunities to advance their education, earn industry certificates, or earn work-based learning opportunities in many career pathways.

We will head over at 1:00 PM and return by 2:30 PM at the latest. We will not need chaperones for this day.  We will, however, need permission slips for each student.  Please follow the link below to submit a permission slip for your child.  These are due by Friday, February 10th.

Attendance

Daily attendance is expected of all students and class begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Coming in late and leaving before school ends at 3:30 also accumulates absences. A significant part of a student’s educational success is derived from classroom participation, activities, discussions, and relationships. We understand that there are circumstances when students are unable to attend school such as illnesses and emergencies; however, we also know that when a student is absent and/or tardy, missed instructional time is impossible to replace. Whenever possible, appointments and activities should be scheduled outside of school hours. Please check the calendar for scheduled days off, so they can be used for routine appointments. We understand this is not always possible, and we request proper documentation for these absences. If you have any documentation, i.e.: doctor’s notes or any legal paperwork, feel free to bring that to the office and we can excuse those absences in our system. Most doctors' offices can print a visit summary for past visits, if necessary.

Please contact Natalie Tomlinson if you have any questions.

  • Please label your child’s belongings, including coats, lunch boxes, water bottles, and backpacks.

October Count: Attendance Matters!

Each year, all school districts in Colorado participate in the Student October Count process to collect data that supports per pupil funding. While the process begins in September and continues through mid-November, there is a one (1) day headcount when all schools report students who are actively enrolled and attending classes at their school. Westgate's October count day is Wednesday, September 21. In addition to taking data from the day, we also report data from both the day before count day and the day after.

Please support us in providing accurate data to the state of Colorado by ensuring that your student(s) is present on the days of September 20, September 21, and September 22.

Contact Natalie Tomlinson or Rochelle Goforth if you have any questions.

Birthday treats: Birthday snacks must be individually wrapped; store bought and contain nutrition information. They cannot come with several in one container and cannot be homemade. Please DO NOT send snacks that do not follow these guidelines. I am not allowed to serve snacks that don't follow these guidelines and if they are sent in, the snacks will be sent to the office to be sent back home. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please see the attached picture for reference.

Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Friday Folders: sign up to help on some or all Fridays throughout the year, sorting papers by student to be sent home in Friday Folders. Spots have been filled into January. Feel free to sign up through the end of May, if you would like.
  • Math Workbooks: Tear out and staple math pages from our math workbooks. The math workbooks are large and heavy and will require you to come into the classroom to work on this.

Our Advocacy Theme for September is, “I am strong”. The students will explore their talents, their interests, and the things that make them awesome.

Specials- We have I-lab for this quarter

  • Friday Folders - Your child should have a Friday folder that comes home each Friday. Please look through the folder with your child and return it to school empty each Monday.
  • Please label your child’s belongings, including coats, lunch boxes, water bottles, and backpacks.
  • Update to Counseling Request system: Hello everyone! We have decided to switch up our counselor request system this year in an effort to better serve our students. Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade will have the opportunity to fill out a paper counselor request form that they get from their teacher. Once they fill out the form, students will turn it into the front desk. Ms. Kinslow, the K-6th school counselor, will collect the forms at the front desk throughout the day and follow-up with those students as soon as possible. For more urgent or serious needs, Parents and Teachers can use the Counselor Referral form located on the Westgate Website under the counseling section. As always, counselors are available via phone and email as well. Thank you so much! – Ms. Kinslow
