Staff Profile

On a personal note, I have two grown children and a loving boyfriend to share my life with as well as 2 cuddly dogs and a bossy cat. I love football and have volunteered with a youth league in the area to help young players be able to play football for over 10 years now. I have my own Harley and love to do yoga, read and work on jigsaw puzzles in my free time. As a professional, I have a Bachelor's in History and a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Gifted Education and hold licensure for Elementary Education as well as 7-12 Social Studies Education. I love being with my students and doing everything that I can to help them reach their full potential while I strive to reach mine as well. I spend as much time learning with them as I do teaching them, and that's just the way I want it. Thank you for sharing your babies with me, it means a great deal to me that you trust me with them each and every day.

JA in a Day is Coming!

We Need a Volunteer Like YOU on Friday, January 25th for JA IN A DAY!
Kids believe they can be whatever they want when they grow up. And they’re right. But getting there isn’t always easy. No matter what your profession, your life experience and determination has prepared you to serve as a role model — not just to your children, but to their peers too.
Junior Achievement (JA) is partnering with Westgate to provide vital enrichment programs to students. In order for your school to take advantage of this exciting opportunity, we need your help to facilitate one of JA’s proven programs. As a JA volunteer, you will use your life experience to become a role model for local students, teaching them about the “economics of life,” and helping them understand the fundamental connection between school and success.

You do not need any special financial skills or knowledge in order to volunteer. JA provides you with everything you need to be successful in the classroom. Volunteers receive training on how to use JA’s hands-on curriculum, and the teacher is there with you for support.

Are you interested in a Gifted Discussion Group?

Hello Parents! As many of you know, I have worked at Westgate for the last eight years teaching both Kindergarten and 3-4 and I am currently completing my Master’s degree in gifted education. As a part of the final days of my program, I would like to hold a parent discussion group surrounding the joys and challenges of raising gifted children, holding at least 3-4 sessions in the month of March. I am looking to have at least 4 participants with children in K-4 grades, but will happily take up to 10 who are interested in joining us for some meaningful discussion about gifted children and our experiences with them. The purpose is for outlet and discussion only, as I am not a licensed counselor or anything like that. I would just like to share some knowledge and resources I have acquired through my 20+ years of both raising and teaching gifted children. If you are interested in joining, please contact me asap and let me know your available times. I was thinking Monday or Wednesday evenings from 4-5 or possibly some Saturday mornings. Children are welcome to attend if you don’t have childcare so long as they can entertain themselves in my classroom with Legos, drawing, games, or anything else they might bring along. The first discussion topic, Defining Giftedness, and some other possible discussion topics are listed below (we will vote and finalize the topics together). I look forward to these discussions and can’t wait to learn from you all! Please contact me at cassie.seybold@westgateschool.org to reserve your spot by February 28th so we can set up our meeting dates and get started.

**Defining Giftedness…How do we know this is what we are dealing with? What can I expect?
Asynchrony and its role in your child’s development
Overexcitabilities and their impact on your child
Social Development and Friendships
Family relationships (parents, siblings, other family and adults)
Twice exceptionality—what is it and how can I help my child?
Mental health issues and being your child’s advocate
Joys and difficulties of parenting gifted children, including sharing of support resources

Help Needed!

If you would be willing to come in next Tuesday or Wednesday and help with binding the Kindergartners end of year portfolios, please let me know.  We have 2 binding machines and they are pretty simple to use (kind of like a three ring whole punch) so don't be afraid if you don't have experience using one.  Please email me if you are able to come help at all.  Thanks!

It's the LAST week! :)

Tuesday, May 30th: Regular Full Day
Literacy--Spring Writing Assessment and Other Final Assessments
Math--Build 3D Creations

Wednesday, May 31st: Regular Full Day, Kindergarten Continuation 8-9am. We will have a pajama/movie party for the kids following the continuation.  Unfortunately, parents cannot stay for this since the 1-2 ceremony begins immediately after ours ends and we can't interrupt theirs with our party.   Permission slips for the movies have been sent home.  Please return them signed or your child will be given alternate activities to take part in the rest of that morning/afternoon.

Thursday, June 1st: Half Day, dismissal at 11:30 am.
Student Led Conferences 12:30-8:30 pm -- these are entirely student led and you will not be meeting directly with a teacher, though Ms. Valenza and I will be around for short questions should you have them.

Friday, June 2nd: Last Day of School! Half Day, Move up to 1st grade and meet the teachers, Yearbook signing, dismissal at 11:30 am
