Odyssey of the Mind

The Westgate Community School banner from the March 11 regional competition for Odyssey of the Mind. As part of the day’s activities, the students collaborated on a banner to be used during a team parade. The students decorated it with a selection of things they value about their school, including the zipline, chickens and freedom.

[Nov. 18, 2018] - Mark your calendars for Dec. 8

To make sure that students who wish to attend the Dec. 1 "Theatre In A Day" fundraiser workshops are able to attend, we have registered for the Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 Odyssey of the Mind workshops. These Skill Building and Spontaneous sessions will be hosted at the site of our regional tournament, Mesa Middle School in Castle Rock. All teams will be onsite from 1 to 4:30 p.m., with Division 1* teams doing Spontaneous and then Skill Building, and Division 2 teams doing Skill Building and then Spontaneous. We will need parent chaperones for each team, and Mr. Rowan and Ms. Frazier will float between sessions. We will send out a SignUp Genius for chaperones and carpooling in the next week or so.

*(wondering if your student is Division 1 or Division 2? Teams of 3rd through 5th graders are Division 1, teams of 6th through 8th graders are Division 2).

[Nov. 13, 2018] Snack sign-up is now live!

And we're underway for the 2018-2019 season! Parents and guardians, please visit the snack sign up and help tame the hungry and keep our competitors focused: Snacks for OMers SignUp Genius

We are thrilled that you’re interested in joining an Odyssey of the Mind adventure at our school. This program provides creative problem-solving opportunities that complement classroom curriculum and are aligned with STEAM-related standards. OMERs (Odyssey of the Mind participants) practice creative story-telling, theatrical skills, hands-on “making” and more in a manner that cultivates confidence in their ability to come up with solutions, and how they present them. And best of all, it’s really FUN!

INFORMATION NIGHT, Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m at Westgate.

Club begins meeting on Nov. 7, 2018 | Wednesdays, 3:45 - 5:30 p.m.

Joining the team means you are committing to be there for your teammates and on the following dates. Give your calendar a double check to make sure these dates work for you:

  • Saturday, Dec. 1 or Dec. 8, 2018 (Workshop – exact date TBD)
  • Saturday, March 9, 2019 (Colorado regional competition)
  • Saturday, April 6, 2019 (State competition)

And you should check your calendar for this time window, just in case:

  • May 22 – 26 (National competition, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI)

We will have a team agreement for parents and students to sign. This will come home after the team meeting, and be available during the information night. The agreement reflects the following points:

  • Constructive behavior and cooperation create successful teams
  • Committing to attend team meetings as best they can
  • Cooperating on whatever solution to the team chooses, even if it’s not their first choice
  • Creating the solution, props, costumes and signs without outside assistance
  • Competing with respect for teammates, the volunteers and other teams

Thank you again for your interest, and we look forward to working with you and your students to express their creative, outside-of-the-box selves!
