Classroom Updates

Service-Learning Exhibition starts April 22

This year, for service learning, students stayed in their advocacy classes to work on projects. Classes chose a topic and then made projects to educate others about that topic.

Projects will be completed and ready for exhibition on April 22 and will be available to view on the left side of the webpage here.

These projects are available for you to learn about and support a range of causes such as bees, unhoused populations, and wild animal habitats.

Community Clean Up – April 22 - 25

Trash pickups are always a popular activity around Earth Day so let’s join the popular crowd. Unfortunately, we still can’t be together doing this as a group so you will pick up litter wherever you’d like! We have a goal of picking up 2021 pieces of litter between April 22 and April 25.

You can choose 30 mins to an hour sometime within those 4 days to head out and make your community a little cleaner.

Westgate has Washington Street adopted from 120th-128th. If you’d like to pick up litter along our adopted street you are more than welcome!

Please fill out this form to indicate you’d like to participate. You’ll receive a sticker, bags, gloves (if you need them) and a general safety video the week of April 19.

Send pictures and how many pieces of litter you picked up to Mrs. Valenza at [email protected]. There will be a running total on the environmental education page of our website so you can follow along the whole weekend.

If you post to social media use the hashtag #WCSEarthDay2021

Conference Sign Up

Here is our link for conferences! They will be on March 18 from 8 am-8 pm and March 19 from 8 am-12 pm. Let me know if you have any questions!

Yearbook Contest

Yearbook Cover Contest

We are inviting all Westgate students to enter their drawings in our yearbook cover contest. 2 Winners will be selected to be displayed on the front and back cover by a panel. Those entries not selected for the covers will be displayed as Honorable Mentions inside the yearbook as long as they meet all the “must include” requirements.

  1. 8 ½ x 11 sheet of white paper (no lines)
  2. Vertical Orientation

All entries must include:

  1. The school name (Westgate Community School)
  2. The date “2020-2021
  3. Must be original artwork (no copyrighted images such as favorite characters)

Tips for a good entry:

  1. Not a lot of white space- lots of color (including background)

Social Zooms

Social Zooms!

Now that we are back in distance learning the need for connection and community is of great importance. Katie Goforth and Julie Ruhl will be hosting grade level Social Zooms for all students throughout the day every Friday. Social Zooms are intended to be an unstructured space for kids to connect. Ms. Katie and Mrs. Ruhl are hosting the Zoom, but the purpose of the Social Zoom is to allow students to connect organically. They will ensure the Zoom remains school appropriate, safe and comfortable for all students!

  • There is a social zoom in the morning and one in the afternoon to accommodate different family needs.
  • In Fifth Grade, the Social Zooms will be from 9-930am and 12:45-1:15pm
  • Here is the AM [9:00 am] Link: https://zoom.us/j/99075578967?pwd=RWtscDY4ZGtxc3NRcGpYTzlBVWkyQT09

  • Social Zooms are completely optional! You can join none, one, or both!
  • Ms. Katie and Mrs. Ruhl will be monitoring the Zoom to maintain school expectations. If there are concerns during the Zoom, they will provide warnings and redirect behavior, but if the behavior continues, the student may be removed from the Zoom.
  • If you have any questions, please email [email protected] - we hope to see your student Friday!

Here is a PDF for all of the assignments for the week. In the bottom right corner is a little tag that says "Graded", these are the assignments that are required and should take extra care. The others are highly suggested as well, but if students are spending more than 6 hours on work a day and not getting everything done, they can just do the graded ones.

*****

Important Dates

Friday, September 4th - No School (Teacher Work Day)

Monday, September 7th - No School (Labor Day)

*****

Communication

The best method of communication for all 5-6 teachers is email. You should always receive a response within 48 hours (excluding weekends). We love communication and believe it is valuable for our students to know that their teachers and parents are working together for their benefit. Please see the communication pathway in the Community Handbook, which suggests always communicating with your child's advocacy or content area teacher regarding concerns first.

*****

Zoom

We will be using Zoom to virtually conduct all our classes. In order to run these classes as smoothly as possible, we have come up with a list of norms for students to follow. Please review these norms with your child:

  • Please take Live Zoom Classes seriously – just as if you were here at school!
  • Turn your camera on (if possible) – we want to see each other
  • Keep yourself muted unless it’s your turn to talk
  • No backgrounds or filters – it’s distracting!  No inversions/flipping screen
  • Listen respectfully to all speakers
  • Language and comments should be respectful and productive
  • Do not spam the chat or use it for off topic discussions
  • DO use the chat for affirmations, on-topic comments, or questions
  • Be on time (to the best of your ability)
  • Be prepared – have notebook, workbooks, or other required materials/supplies ready
  • You MUST sign in using your first name and last initial or you will not be admitted
  • All classes will be recorded and posted to Microsoft Teams

Consequences for violating these expectations:

  • 1st offense: Verbal reminder (whole class)
  • 2nd offense: Private warning through chat
  • 3rd offense: Parent email
  • 4th offense: Removal from Zoom meeting

*****

Advocacy

The school-wide advocacy focus for the month of August is Coping with Transition & Change. We will focus on topics such as team building, embracing ambiguity, & learning how to be students and classmates during remote learning.

*Please note that there will be classwork available and assigned to students on Fridays, however, there will NOT be any live lessons. Students are expected to work on your assignments in between live lessons, and after them. There will be a sample schedule sent out through email to give you a suggested structure to get all of the work done.

Look for...

Students will come home from Orientation with an assignment on Microsoft Teams where they will answer questions about themselves. This is all on Microsoft Teams, there are no paper copies. These questions will be discussed at our first Advocacy meeting on Friday, so please make sure to fill out the form prior to the meeting. Details on this assignment and the meeting will be sent in an email next week.
