Extra Practice!
As I discussed with many of you during conferences, a number of students continue to struggle with previous concepts (like long division and fraction operations).  I will be giving out practice sheets each week that you can use at home to give your child some additional support.  Students who complete the extra practice are encouraged to return it so I can provide feedback. Copies of the assignments will also be available digitally through the class OneNote and in the assignment section located at the top of this page.

Week of April 8

All 5th graders will be taking math with Ms. Foster (long term sub for Sanders)

All 6th graders will be taking math with Mrs. Dewar

Unit: Data & Statistics (see their class pages for more detail)

Week of Mar. 18

5th grade students will be getting math instruction from Mrs. Sanders and her long-term sub Ms. Foster during the three weeks of CMAS

6th grade students will be getting math instruction from Mrs. Dewar during the three weeks of CMAS

Week of March 11

Unit Assessment this week - begins Tuesday!
See class OneNote for optional practice.

Topics/Skills:
  • Using LCM to find a common denominator
  • Adding and subtracting fractions
  • Using GCF to simplify fractions
  • Multiplying fractions - won't always use the x symbol for multiplication; students should know other words and symbols to indicate multiplication
  • Dividing fractions
  • All of the above skills with mixed numbers or whole numbers included
  • Reading/writing expressions for the skills above
  • Applying these skills to complex word problems, including multiple steps
  • Using/converting measurement units in application of these skills (conversion reference guide will be provided)

Week of March 4

Unit: Operations with Fractions

Big Idea: Problem Solving

Skills:
  • Reading word problem carefully to monitor for meaning and determine importance of information
  • Combine operations for multiple step problems
  • Apply to measurement and data

Week of Feb. 25

Unit: Operations with Fractions

Big Idea: Dividing fractions

Activities:
  • Whole class notes/instructions
  • Independent & whole group practice
  • Small group review and teacher time
  • Workshop

Week of Feb. 18

Unit: Operations with Fractions

Big Idea: Multiplication with fractions and mixed numbers

Skills:
  • converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions
  • simplifying fractions
  • multiplying straight across both denominator and numerator
  • cross canceling (shortcut to simplifying!)
  • writing multiplication expressions from word problems

Week of Feb. 11

Unit: Operations with Fractions

Big Idea: Multiplication of Fractions

Activities:
